OK, this is pretty wild. Just learned about a Chromium-based terminal browser called Carbonyl (github.com/fathyb/carbonyl), so I fired it up in Cool Retro Term with a sweet old-timey amber color scheme (and scan lines which you can't see in the still shot) and went to one of my games on the BBS. You can start the game, but the keyboard controls don't work. Still, this is so pretty I could stare at it all day. 😂

Found an enjoyable, new to me tutorial series on Youtube: Building a Zelda-style Dungeon by Radical Slice. I'd call it beginner-intermediate level - it gets into the usual basics like movement & bounding box collision detection, but also gets into entity management & using message queues to spawn actions. I got myself an 8Bitdo Lite controller specifically to play on my laptop and it's suuuuper smooth and wonderful to use, especially coming from the tiny laptop arrow keys I've been using. Worth every penny!

It also works with my WIP game, but Pyxel seems to use the buttons below the d-pad as the d-pad (using pyxel.GAMEPAD1_BUTTON_DPAD_LEFT, etc), which is a little weird but maybe remappable?

Kinda on a whim but also kinda related to the goal of doing more things this year, I spent a few hours today porting a long time work-in-progress from (largely ) to (), and now the two versions are functionally equivalent. Not super difficult, just lots of switching between 1-indexed tables and 0-indexed lists and plenty of "self" loathing (the word "self" had to be added 369 times to the Python version 😩).

I always wish I could do everything I do better. Make more & better games, do better at my job or at acquiring skills for a different one, saving money, taking better physical care of myself, etc. This year, I'd like to be able to be OK with not always having it in me to do any of those things. That's really the hardest resolution to keep!

Just tried for the first time by porting a simple angle toy I made by:

* Replacing PICO-8 syntax shortcuts and trig functions with standard
* Combining _update() and _draw() to make TIC()
* Changing PICO-8 0..1 angles to radians.

I didn't change any equivalently-interfaced functions (circ, line, print,btn) or color value numbers, and this is how it ended up. Kinda fun to experiment like this!

I still play games a fair bit. They're fun, they're simple and now that I've gotten into , I also find them to be miraculous examples of (often) a single developer working within serious limitations. This is a favorite I play often, do you know what it is without Googling?

So much of the time I feel like a complete fraud at just about everything I do (you may notice I describe pretty much all of my games with some variant of "silly" or "stupid" even when I think they're fun), and this especially goes for Day Job (tm). But today I solved a particularly vexing problem we've been having and briefly felt like I know what I'm doing, and that was nice. I'd like to figure out how to bottle that feeling and order a six-pack of it. 😜
