On vacation for ten days with good-friends next door who love gaming. I came prepared with many great options for some one-shots in various genres with various systems.

Alas, they leave tomorrow, and no one has so much as created a character!

This is not a complete surprise. This group of friends have many inertia and indecision issues. And we’ve had a great time in other ways.

But I thought in ten days we might squeeze ONE good session in between their arguments about what to eat!

So the game didn’t wind up working out great for the eight-year-old. He loved inventing details about his character (“He weighs a million pounds! His name’s Arizona! He only eats pies!”), but he had trouble paying any attention to the other participants and details … even the story itself. No big deal; he’s just not ready!

Today, I get the opportunity of introducing four people to their first ever #ttrpg experience! A while ago, I bought a huge bag of inexpensive sets of dice, and I love sending new players home with a set to keep. They’ve got plenty to choose from.

The newbies are actually a family of four, and the youngest is only eight. Some eight-year-olds take to this immediately, but I’ll have to make sure to tailor the experience to his level of interest.

Ultimately, I hope the *all* come back for more!

Coincidentally reading *Ministry for the Future * (by #KimStanleyRobinson) while seeing headlines about the #hottest day ever recorded on Earth and articles about unsurvivable wet-bulb temperatures.

I highly recommend the book. (It’s both enjoyable and existentially terrifying.)

I am also genuinely hopeful we (as a species) can get through the #climateCrisis. Sadly not nearly so hopeful we’ll get there without a *lot* of very bad times first, though.

I have long loved the comic, and I expected to liked the movie, but I am blown away. Stunning animation, great acting, moving and exciting, and a truly terrific adaptation. Best of all—and most importantly—it captured the themes proudly.

Oh, and it’s super fun, too!
