OK, folks, whose brilliant idea was it to make auto-generated heading IDs for anchor links in the CSS spec end with ① or ② or ⑤ characters (for the 1st, 2nd, or 5th heading in a section without an otherwise specified ID).

Looks very cute in a URL bar, but gets copy & pasted as URL encoded character barf. And then there's the likely screen-reader mangling of special characters.

This had better be for Editor's drafts only & prompt a warning to add custom IDs before publication.

🤨

"Click Allow to confirm you're not a robot" says the website, after I've already clicked on something that looks like an "I am not a robot" reCaptcha dialog, but is actually a PNG screenshot.

Browser popup asks if I'd like to allow notifications from {long-randomized URL subdomain}.

🤔

The randomized URL, a redirect from the website I'd tried to open, suggests they're not actually trying to trick me into notifications, just using that API as interaction. But the fake reCaptcha is sure sketch.

A brief, timely note from @kizu about why, in web browser standards world, sometimes it's not good news that a browser wants to ship that feature you really want!

> The absence of open issues in CSSWG for these features cannot be taken as a signal that they are ready to ship: authors just started to play with them, and I am not sure engineers and CSSWG members from other browsers had a chance to take an in-depth look into the specs and play with the prototypes just yet.

OK, I closed all windows & restarted Firefox & the context menu is working now, but 😱 there is no "Restore previous session" or "Recently closed windows" in the history!

What about all those articles I was going to read????

And the "About Firefox" dialog still shows it trying to download an update without actually transferring any bytes.

Ever since the last update (to 135.0), the context menu (the menu that pops up when you right-click an item) has been completely borked: it shows every possible item, for all possible contexts, all at once in a giant scrolling menu.

And none of the options, relevant or not, actually work.

But checking the version just triggered a new update download, so it might improve soon?

I don't usually download .0 versions, but I guess I'd ignored the v134 update for too long!

USPol, public service accountability & risk assessment

The upheaval in the US public service since the DOGE takeover should serve as a similar warning to civil servants everywhere: How will you uphold civil rights, privacy rights, & your national constitution if elected politicians won't?

A coup has happened. No one was marched outside & shot, or tortured to hand over keys & computer passwords. But people with no legal authority are in control because there was no plan to refuse illegal orders.

It's really great that so many organizations are archiving & re-publishing all the US government web pages, reports, & datasets that the Trump administration suppressed.

It's also important for people in Canada, the UK, etc, to know that if you tried to do something similar, you could be sued for copyright infringement.

I have no clue if the US government's original rejection of anything like Crown Copyright was intended as a protection against tyranny, but it sure seems like a good idea now.

USPoli, Trans Rights, being an ally

For all Americans who are angry about the President's attacks on trans people, there is one thing you can do right now at the community level to make a difference:

Get rid of gender-segregated washrooms.

In your workplaces, community centres, at your favourite café, bar, or arts venue.

For single-toilet restrooms, this is as easy as taking down the signs, & is unlikely to cause any backlash.

For multi-stall: better to change it now before it gets outlawed?

Hey @chriscoyier, I'm getting a little annoyed at you hanging out in my open tabs, staring impatiently at the stuff I'm actually reading instead of finally getting back to the video in your blog post.

This might be what makes me declare open-tabs bankruptcy. There's a lot that have been waiting for much longer than you!

(But at least it's not the grumpy-tough-guy pic from your site header! Now that's a Chris you don't want to leave waiting.)

Doh. No one reminded me of free Apple TV weekend. Clearly I don't have enough AI bots following me.

Probably too late to do all of Ted Lasso last season & still enjoy it. And I'm way too tired for any serious Oscar-contender movies. Time to pick a glossy star-studded romcom for the afternoon.

AppleTV+ originals free to stream on Jan 4&5.

Two days might be just enough to get through the final season of Ted Lasso, if I'm in the right mood.

Also taking any recommendations for their original films.

GQ with a particularly classy way of handling a social media embed that gets blocked by my anti-tracker settings.

(Even if the whole article still seems to be on of those "people made a hashtag joke on X-Twitter & we've decided that it is a thing now". But it is also kind of a nice ode to the hyperlink, while pondering on the nerdy need to dig up the context of every interesting fact.)

FYI to anyone who sometimes needs to generate video captions / transcripts:

The "ClipChamp" video editor, which ships included in Windows 11, has a feature to auto-generate captions via Microsoft Azure services.

The captions are then displayed in a UI that lets you click to jump to time points. And you can edit single-word errors in the transcript & it will keep the timestamps sorted. Larger edits currently make a mess of the timing. You can download the SRT file, but not upload one.

Good: Pop-up profile previews.
Better: If they waited a second or two before popping up, and if there was a way to trigger them from keyboard.

Mildly annoying: The dark/dim color scheme now has too-bright text for posts, while still having too-dim text for supporting info. I'd love to see some more theme options or a theme editor.

Unchanged, still really, really annoying: Keyboard navigation is unusable (arrow keys jump to next post, so no way to tweak position or scroll longer posts). 😣

Annoying: You have to scroll back up to the top of the notification list before clearing the unread notifications state. I'm guessing this is to avoid unchecking notifications that have come in while you were scrolled down? But there must be a better solution to that.

Good: Grouping boost/favorite notifications for a single post. The total count was a little buggy at first, but it seems to be better now? Or maybe I just haven't had a popular post in a couple weeks.

Good: Post editor now lets you re-order multiple images & shows them in the cropping used on posts.
Better: The image editor preview should show a square crop, not 16:9, which is not used anymore.

Good: When you get a notification that someone follows you, the action button now says "Follow back" or "Mutual" instead of saying "Unfollow" if you already follow them.
Better: Add a menu with options to block them, since Fedi is now getting spammy accounts following just to create notifications. 😠

Thoughts on Mastodon 4.3 updates, now that I've got used to them:

Good: Click-to-show image alt text as proper HTML text.
Better: if you could show alt text without downloading/showing images that are hidden because of sensitive setting or data saving, or because they haven't yet been cached from an external server.

Good: Conversation view warns that some replies may not be shown for posts from other servers.
Better: Add a click to fetch them, instead of linking to the other server.

English, as we know, is an international language full of words with different meanings to different speakers. Taking a zoom call without pants on is very different for someone in London vs LA.

One which I've noticed a lot recently is "yeah". To me, it is a cautious or tired agreement, pronounced "yah".

But others seem to use "yeah" more like "Yay" or "Yasss", as an enthusiastic, emphatic yes.

What is it for you? And is English your first language? (Only 4 options, so no regional split 🤷🏻‍♀️)

🔁🆗

Yeah = yah 🫤 (English 1st language)
Yeah = Yay! 🥳 (English 1st language)
Yeah = yah 🫤 (other 1st language)
Yeah = Yay! 🥳 (other 1st language)
