My hot take: same thinking as with the charging port of the Magic Mouse: it’s designed to discourage a specific behavior (in this case, turning off the Mac vs putting it to sleep). It’s fine.

I keep seeing people saying that this screen, asking you to pick a browser from an unordered list of random apps you’ve never heard of (with a few exceptions), is not going to be confusing at all.

Those people clearly haven’t worked in anything remotely related to tech support.

Lmao at all the Twitter people arguing that Electron apps being slow and memory hungry is a reasonable trade off because “it saves time” (vs more efficient native apps).

Unless you have more developers than users, wasted user time ≫ saved dev time. By several orders of magnitude.

After a full weekend decompiling macOS' powermetrics to find how retrieving all that energy info works (trying to replicate it on iOS), it looks like it's not possible to access the GPU power consumption for iOS :(

The energy info is stored on the IORegistry, which is available on iOS, but accessing certain properties (like the energy, for some reason) requires a specific entitlement —which macOS has by default— but iOS doesn't.

The EU changes forcing Apple to allow third party engines isn’t going to bring “more choice”. It’s going to bring back many of the “this website only works in X browser” shit he had before, just with Chromium based browsers instead of Internet Explorer. Things only got better because iOS (forcing WebKit) became too big to ignore.

I have been using a password manager everywhere for the last decade, which means I have strong 16-digit fully random passwords for all websites. Even for the shitty ones I only visited once.

Except for fucking banks. Because those don’t support password managers. And reset my passwords periodically. Which means I’m this 👌 close to slapping a post-it with them to my desk.

Resetting passwords without a known breach is dumb.

It’s nice that Apple has precise tracking information for delieveries. My new iPad, for example, is scheduled to arrive today between 09:30 and 11:30AM.

Accuracy, however, is not quite there yet, as it’s 7PM already and the iPad is not here 😂

I recently nuked my main Twitter account and started using my secondary account sporadically and the amount of gore and morbid videos you’re spammed with in the “For You” timeline of a new account (with no users blocked) is INSANE. I’m not particularly sensible and this stuff is sickening.

This is quite likely a case of manufacturing a display based on the specs that people look for, rather than the actual specs that would make a good product.

The panel is 15.6", 1080p@144Hz, and IPS. Looks like it checks all the boxes. And then, if you keep looking... abysmal color reproduction. Like, it's able to show about HALF the colors of a decent modern display. For reference, a 16 year old Apple Cinema Display already did 86% of sRGB.

I know I’m being nit-picky. The other account in the tuple is just the previous account (if any). But… HOW did you end up with an API so fucked up that you feel the need to include the previous property value on a getter “because it can be useful to detect changes” (according to the documentation)? Can you imagine if every API did this?
