After a full weekend of book/writing related things in Ottawa at CanCon2023 this weekend I came back to Sudbury this afternoon just in time to attend Waubgeshig Rice’s launch for Moon of the Turning Leaves. Which I happened to listen to on audiobook on my drive back from Ottawa.

I’m just wrapping up a wonderful weekend at (having been posting about it a bit more on BlueSky). Ton of wonderful panels to attend and fellow writers to talk to. My reappearance on Mastadon may be due in part to attending a panel called Online Connections ina Post-Twitter World.

So I’ve been largely over on BlueSky lately finding fellow writers to connect with but after a month or so I’m starting to see the limitations to the platform. Coming to the conclusion I may have to be present on more than one platform for now to maximize my connections to the communities I follow. I do have invites for BlueSky of people need.

The ironic thing is up until very recently I had copies of all the TIFF programme guides that listed every film for the each year that I attended that I could go look this stuff up in. I decided last year to declutter and donated the box full of guides to my local indie cinema. They were having a garage sale/fundraiser and figured it was a good way for them to connect with another cinephile.

Another film that I saw as part of the Dialogues was Alan Clarke’s unconventional and chilling short film Elephant (1989) about Sectarian violence in Northern Ireland. It was at the 1999 Festival but can’t recall who introduced it. Would love to think it was Gus Van Sant who would later go on to use the title and some of Clarke’s editing choices for his 2003 film about high school shootings but I don’t think Van Sant was at the festival that year. Maybe @CaptFuzz can recall?

One of my favourite programs of the festival was the Dialogues Talking with Pictures where a director would present a film that was meaningful to them and have a discussion about the film with the audience. I saw John Waters present the 1968 Burton/Taylor flop Boom! that Waters said he used as a litmus test for relationships. I saw Richard Linklater present and dissect Two-Lane Blacktop (1971).

After I graduated and started to have a bit of an income and some vacation time I would book the whole week off to binge on the Festival. It wasn’t unheard of for my friends and I to squeeze in 30+ films over the festival average 3-4 a day sometimes as many as 5 films. It made staying awake for those midnight madness screenings even harder.

I started attending while still a student at UofToronto lining up for rush tickets to Midnight Madness screenings at the Bloor. It was so much fun. It almost felt subversive watching gross out and horror movies with a bunch of weirdos while grey haired patrons attended galas at Roy Thomson Hall. Got to see a lot of fun stuff including Peter Jackson’s Meet the Feebles and Braindead as well as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused, lots of horror films too but I tended to shy away from those.

I really miss attending the Toronto Film Festival. I went to a portion of it probably since about 1990 to 2006 when I moved away. It was such a joy to go into a darkened theatre with fellow festival goers see films from all over the world, get to do Q&A with directors and actors. Now that my kids are older and my work schedule a little less hectic I think about taking a week off to attend again, but not sure I’d enjoy it on the same level. So much has changed with the festival.

What new hobbies have you started recently? (recently being all relative) I took up 3D printing this year and have been enjoying all aspects of it. There’s another project (drawing related) I’m working on but less prepared to talk about it yet. Maybe it’s the imposter syndrome related to making art.

Trying to decide what it’s going to take to get me to completely abandon that other hellsite and start using this one more regularly. I think part of it is I just have invested the time and energy here. I spent 11+ years on that other site making connections and meeting people. I still feel like the community I had there is fragmented and barely exists anymore there or anywhere.

Listening to Terry Crews autobiography “Tough” on Audible and it’s very illuminating in a variety ways of ways. (Was surprised we’re the same age.) I really appreciate his insight into work and money and that to have fulfilling work is about being valued - not about the money/prestige. Sure everyone wants to earn a liveable wage but we want to be valued. Which is the opposite of how I feel most days by my work.
