Iran was busy in Lebanon, Russia is busy in Ukraine. Without their help, Assad fell. A victory for the West? Hardly. We now have another ISIS-like Sunni "caliphate" controlling Syria. These guys are no better than Hezbollah, and have more global ambitions.

But, as we have learned from COVID, viruses are really good at mutating. Influenza viruses are artists at doing that. They swap pieces of genome with other influenza viruses, in addition to undergoing point mutations. A recent isolate from a farm worker in Texas had acquired the ability to infect human respiratory cells.

Dead chickens = fewer eggs = expensive eggs. Now for the interesting part. H5N1 has since infected a whole range of species, from seals to minks, and is currently infecting vast numbers of dairy cows. It infects the mammary glands of cows.

Remember how the Saudis were staying quiet about the wars in Gaza and Lebanon? Now that Hezbollah had to retreat from Syria to Lebanon, Iran is busy supporting Hezbollah and Hamas, and Russia is busy with Ukraine, Sunni rebels of the ISIS variety are making their play for Syria. I suspect they are financially backed by the Saudis, who may be seeking to topple a Shia dynasty. The Sunni/Shia struggle defines much of what happens in the Middle East.
