The sprawling ruins of Teotihuacan, just 25 miles northeast of Mexico City, are the remains of the largest metropolis in the Americas and one of the world's largest cities in its heyday. Perhaps as many as 125,000 inhabitants lived within its confines during the city's apex between AD 500 and AD 700. There is much speculation and controversy about Teotihuacan's origin, its inhabitants, and end. There is even a problem with its name, The Aztecs, who arrived in the area more than five centuries after its abandonment, called it Teotihuacan, or Place of the Gods...or did they? Archaeologist, Veronica Ortega, has found some evidence that they may have called it, Teohuacan, City of the Sun. They used the abandoned site as a place where their rulers were anointed. Ortega thinks the Spanish conquerors may have changed the name to give it a religious connotation, and to de-emphasize the city as an Aztec center of political power. nationalpost.com/pmn/news-pmn/

Plazuelas is a Classic period archaeological site in the northern fringe of Mesoamerica, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. After suffering decades of severe drought and fire, the city was abandoned early in the PostClassic period, Now, a team of researchers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico have investigated the burned remains of structures to determine the approximate date of the city's destruction and subsequent abandonedment, Using archaeomagnetic dating techniques, they have determined that the city-wide fire occurred some time between 883 AD and 940 AD. This destruction was the result of internal or external warfare, and the city was abandoned completely by 1000 AD.

Throughout the Aztec world, clay wind instruments in the form of human skulls, themselves decorated with owls and skulls, have been found by archaeologists. Because skulls and owls are associated with death, these artifacts have been dubbed, "Aztec death whistles." The actual use of these whistles, which produce a bloodcurdling shriek, is unknown and is still being debated by archaeologists. First considered toys, then interpreted as ritual instruments associated with the Aztec death god, Mictiautecutli, they have come to be explained as instruments of battle. They are thought to have been blown to inspire the troops and strike terror in the hearts of the enemy. Since 1999, they have been associated with the wind god, Ehecatl and the ritual of human sacrifice. The debate continues. iflscience.com/aztec-death-whi

The town of Ixcaquixtla in the state of Puebla, Mexico, was built upon a large Prehispanic funerary complex. Recently, while conducting a public works project in the town square, workers uncovered an intact tomb dating from the Mesoamerican Classic period (AD 100-AD650). The skeletal remains of 20 individuals, along with more than 150 funerary offerings, were recovered by archaeologists from INAH (the National Institute of Anthropology and History). inah.gob.mx/boletines/el-centr

A circular structure has been excavated and consolidated at the ancient Maya city of Itzamkanac, (now called El Tigre) in Campeche state, by archaeologists from Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). The structure has been identified as being dedicated to the Maya Feathered-Serpent deity, Kukulcan, also known as the wind-god Ehécatl-Quetzalcóatl in the highlands of Mesoamerica. The complex was built in the Early Classic period and is dated to around AD 1100. inah.gob.mx/boletines/descubre Tigre

While renovating St Michael's chapel on a hilltop overlooking the town of Atlixco in the state of Puebla, Mexico, workers uncovered a Pre-Hispanic structure. When salvage archaeologists were called in, they confirmed that this discovery was indeed a part of a temple platform in use from AD 100 to after AD 900. Rumors of such a temple's existence have circulated for more than 400 years, but no evidence had been found until now. bit.ly/48FiFJ9

For more than 3000 years, the Mesoamerican culture area was witness to the rise (and fall) of more than eight great civilizations: Olmec, Maya, “Totonac," Teotihuacan, Zapotec, Mixtec, Toltec, and Aztec. The "Golden Age," or Classic Period, of these civilizations occurred between AD 150 and AD 900, but our interest here, will extend back in time to the very earliest Mesoamerican cultures, as well.

Mesoamerica was a culture area which encompassed the southern two-thirds of Mexico, all of Belize and Guatemala, and the western halves of Honduras and El Salvador. A culture area is a region with different cultures, but all sharing similar beliefs, practices and customs in common. This commonality characterized Mesoamerica from 1800 BC onward until the Spanish conquest in AD 1519.

Hello Everybody.
Please bear with me as I explore Mastodon for the first time. I am completely new at this, and there is much I don't know or understand.
I made two test-postings last month, but I really didn't know what I was doing at the time. The subject of the two test-posts was ancient , the culture area in which I am most interested. Forward into the unknown!
