From the article: "In an executive order issued January 20, President Donald Trump paused new foreign aid funding to global health programs, and four days later, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a stop-work order on existing foreign aid assistance. Surveys suggest that these changes forced more than a third of global organizations that provide essential HIV services to close within days of the announcements.

"Hundreds of thousands of people are losing access to HIV treatments as a result. Women and girls are missing out on cervical cancer screening and services for gender-based violence, too. A waiver Rubio later issued in an attempt to restore lifesaving services has had very little impact.

“We are in a crisis,” said Jennifer Sherwood, director of research, public policy, at amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research, at a data-sharing event on March 17 at Columbia University in New York. “Even funds that had already been appropriated, that were in the field, in people’s bank accounts, [were] frozen.”

From the article: "In 2018, Charlie Sprinkman was working for an organic beverage company, a job that required them to travel to 42 states. But along the way, they struggled to find LGBTQ+ hangouts. The solution came to them while they were driving home from Brave Trails, a youth LGBTQ+ leadership summer camp where they were a counselor: They’d create Everywhere Is Queer, a digital map of queer-owned businesses.

"Launched in January 2022 with a website and social media presence, Everywhere Is Queer has grown to a directory of over 13,000 LGBTQ+-owned brick-and mortar and online businesses, services and community groups across the globe. Since February, a mobile app has been available on iOS and Android with over 80,000 downloads and many more resources, including a job board with LGBTQ+ and ally-owned businesses looking to hire. From the article: “The company you keep says a lot about you.

"New York Governor Andrew Cuomo stepped down from office in October 2021 amidst rampant allegations of sexual misconduct and the apparent mishandling of nursing home deaths during the COVID shutdowns. Now, he’s making a comeback — with a senior campaign official who worked for a prolific anti-trans, anti-abortion organization, the founder of which brags about purportedly detransitioning his child."

From the article: "On January 27, 2025, with the stroke of a pen, thousands of military careers were slated for termination. That was the day President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning transgender individuals from serving in the military. This order was not only severe in its scope but alarmingly rushed in its execution and callous in its treatment of service members who have devoted their lives to protecting our nation.

"Despite rhetoric suggesting this policy allows for nuance, the reality is absolute. The Department of Defense has abandoned any pretense of "grandfathering" transgender service members, many of whom have been serving honorably since first permitted to openly serve in 2017. These individuals—who meet all military requirements, are deployed worldwide, and serve with distinction—are now labeled unfit based on a characteristic that has nothing to do with their abilities or performance.

"This abrupt reversal represents an extraordinary betrayal of trust. Service members who came forward, often at great personal risk, under previous assurances from military leadership that they could serve as transgender troops, now face involuntary separation. As the United States Secretary of the Navy, and during my own military service, I committed to an institution that prided itself on never leaving anyone behind. Yet thousands of transgender service members are now being abandoned without regard for their years of effective and dedicated service."

Big Picture Science for Mar 17, 2025: Amazing Arctic

What’s it like to live on a block of ice, especially when it thaws? An environment writer shares his forty-year experience in the Arctic, including the time a paddling polar bear tracked him on a river. He describes the stunning beauty of America’s last truly wild place and the dramatic changes to the landscape he recently witnessed. Recent research has backed up his eyewitness accounts, as an arctic scientist presents the latest data collected from a part of world warming four times faster than the rest of the planet.

Guests:

* Jon Waterman – Author of Into the Thaw: Witnessing Wonder Amid the Arctic Climate Crisis
* Twila Moon – Deputy Lead Scientist and Science Communication Liaison at the National Snow and Ice Data Center

From the article: "On March 4, Arkansas lawmakers introduced HB1668, the Vulnerable Youth Protection Act, a sweeping bill that would criminalize support for the social transition of transgender youth. The bill allows parents to sue anyone who affirms a child’s gender identity, defining social transition broadly as “any act by which a minor adopts or espouses a gender identity that differs from the minor’s biological sex… including without limitation changes in clothing, pronouns, hairstyle, and name.” It also serves as a total ban on youth gender-affirming care, prohibiting both surgeries and hormone therapy for transgender minors. But the bill goes even further: it asserts extraterritorial jurisdiction, meaning lawsuits could be brought against people outside of Arkansas if they are deemed to have helped a transgender child transition. The penalties are staggering—minimum damages of $10,000 per defendant, with punitive damages reaching up to $10 million for those involved in medical care."

From the article: "PARIS, March 17 (Reuters) - The United States reported the first outbreak of the deadly H7N9 bird flu on a poultry farm since 2017, as the country continues to grapple with another bird flu strain that has infected humans and caused egg prices to hit record highs.

"The spread of avian influenza, commonly called bird flu, has ravaged flocks around the world, disrupting supply and fuelling higher food prices. Its spread to mammals, including dairy cows in the U.S., has raised concerns among governments about a risk of a new pandemic."

From the article: "New technology — and its rapid adoption for remote work during COVID-19 — continues to break down many barriers for people with disabilities. There are more ways than ever for workplaces to ensure accessibility, often at little to no cost. For example, voice recognition expands communication options for those who face challenges with traditional keyboards. And auto-captioning ensures that people who are deaf or experiencing hearing loss can fully engage with multimedia content."

From the article: "Every year, my colleagues and I put together a list of what we think are the top 10 breakthrough technologies of that year. When it came to innovations in biotech, there was a clear winner: lenacapavir, a drug that was found to prevent HIV infections in 100% of the women and girls who received it in a clinical trial.

You never hear “100%” in medicine. The trial was the most successful we’ve ever seen for HIV prevention. The drug was safe, too (it’s already approved to treat HIV infections). And it only needed to be injected twice a year to offer full protection."

From the article: "The Trump administration is withdrawing the nomination of physician and former Florida congressman David Weldon, MD, to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), according to media reports.

"Weldon, who served in Congress from 1995 to 2009, was scheduled to have a confirmation hearing today before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP). Weldon was likely to face many questions from committee members about his views on vaccines, given his history of questioning the safety of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine and his past criticism of the CDC over vaccine safety research. In 2007, Weldon coauthored a bill that would have removed vaccine safety research from the CDC.

"Weldon, like Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has long promoted the theory that the MMR vaccine is linked to an increase in autism diagnoses, despite multiple studies that have found no such association. As Stat reports, Weldon appeared in a 2016 documentary that suggested the federal health agencies had conspired to cover up the link between the MMR vaccine and autism. "
