Gretchen Whitmer signed Michigan's abortion rights law in an afternoon ceremony, with speeches & fanfare. She wore a bright pink blazer and a "Bans Off Our Bodies" lapel pin.

You'd be forgiven for thinking it won't, given how frequently the response from lawmakers has been thoughts and prayers -- and nothing else. But in some states, at least, new legislation has a real chance of passing, mainly because the midterms have put a different party in charge.
