V for Vendetta is better in the comics and why it matters even though Alan Moore is sussy

Continuing research for this video essay on, well, *a lot of things* but part of it deals with anarchism in comics and goddamn I finally understand why Alan Moore hated the V for Vendetta movie

The fight scenes add nothing to the plot, they undercut the overall message with an unnecessary romance subplot that isn’t *nearly* as touched on in the comics, and the transition from The Voice of Fate to this Fox News schtick fails to achieve the same effect and point.

Also the “modernization” of the plot undermines the story and V as a character, and what’s left out is *critical* to what the message of the art is by the last issue.

The whole thing is just… really frustrating.

Moore and Lloyd managed to show through Adam Susan a much more accurate result of an entrenched fascist government (a bumbling, disturbed man who, while sincerely believing in fascism, has all the blindsides accompanied by that belief) and the tilt of fate in favor of anarchism when presented the alternative of authoritarianism.

The point ends up going from “The Patriot Act is bad and Hugo Weaving should blow it up” to a more complex “Authoritarian Grip inherently leads to inclinations towards Rebellion; Anarchism becomes inevitable”

Anyway V in the comics is way more compelling and presents a reasonably accurate if somewhat simplified and stereotypical understanding of anarchism as defined by its anti-fascistic principles.

Goddamn I’m not looking forward to having to read Anarky to learn about a complex but fucking seriously lacking take on anarchists in comics before I get the absolute privilege of reading the Cody Ziglar Spider-Punk run again.
