Ukraine finds an inventive way of killing Russian soldiers...

Ukraine finds an inventive way of killing Russian soldiers (kyivindependent.com/ukraine-be) and tankies call it a war crime because there is a possibilty of a risk that a civilian could have died.

It's cool to have such an impossible standard for what constitutes lawful warfare allows you to equate the victim defending itself to the invader.

That's why I like talking about railway suburbs. Cities in Europe at least are mostly fine and need only incremental improvements to be better for car-free residengs. It's the suburbs that need fixing.

A suburb is also the small scale appropriate for traffic calming improvements. These will improve the lives of local residents but won't change urban geography or anything.

The railway is the connection to the wider world, which is vital for the daily life of most people.

Blog in which I try to sort out the good from the bad in "15 min cities".

On a small neighbourhood scale I like the policies: reducing car traffic on local streets, better walking and cycling infrastructure.

But the grand theory of urbanism behind it is bunk and used to justify NIMBYism against housing and commercial development, and neglecting the role of rapid transit in shaping cities.

Wow, the new Paris fare policy is so stupid. It's 2.50€ to take the train through the entire region but if you switch to a bus you need to pay 2€ more?

Also I see they got rid of the 10 fare bulk discount.

You can see how rushed the implementation of this single fare policy was because you can't charge the train fares on the anonymous Navigo anymore, only bus/tram fares.

Remember, they'd only recently introduced the anonymous Navigo to get rid of the paper tickets. Now paper tickets are back.

Just realised it's faster to take the underground tram between Gare du Midi and Gare du Nord in Brussels than the train.

6 stops in 9 min for the tram, 2 stops in 10 min for the train, on a slightly longer route. If the tram tunnel is ever converted to metro 3, it should be even faster without the flat junction in Lemonnier.

Shows how much time is wasted for the trains by the complex track layout of Gare du Nord and especially Midi. 22.7 km/h scheduled speed...

Also I liked the graph in this article, showing a boom in German rail freight volumes, while they were cratering in France after liberalisation.

Update on the French rail strike and the freight situation.

So actually Fret SNCF is breaking even today, their trouble is coming from bleeding money in the years prior and the Commission was asking them to pay back France for the subsidies. That was obviously not happening and would bankrupt the company. Instead France negotiated a restructuring to split away locomotive maintenance and shed 10% of the workforce.

Of course the Russians keep seeing CIA coups in every popular demonstration, that's exactly how they operate in Africa. Pay people to demonstrate, pay journalists to cover the demos as significant events.

The paid journalists are also kept in line through coercion by the Wagner troops on the ground. The one interviewed here managed to escape only after the Russians started winding down their operations as they escalated the war in Ukraine.

Seems that Siegen does in fact have an ok-ish frequency bus corridor along the valley. Checked a timetable at a bus stop and there was a max 9 min gap between buses on a Saturday afternoon.

Some buses are express, they don't make all stops, effective frequency for some origin-destination pairs is worse than that.

It does mean that carfree life is tolerable if you live in the valley and rarely need to go to a destination up a hill
