"The Eastern Trail is a 62 mile multi-use, non-motorized greenway, that connects Bug Light in Casco Bay, South Portland to Kittery, Maine. Approximately thirty percent of the trail is off-road, and the trail is a part of the which will eventually connect to , approximately 3000 miles. The Eastern Trail is currently composed of 21 miles of off-road trails on the former Eastern Railroad bed with the remainder 41 miles on public roads.

"The entirety of the Eastern Trail is built to ADA standards. The trail surface varies between pavement and stone dust/gravel. Most of the trail is 10-12 feet wide, with some sections with an 8-foot width. There is a 30-inch opening between the bollards at entrances to keep out motorized vehicles, but wide enough to allow access for wheelchairs.

"The off-road section connecting Scarbrough to Saco privdes access to the 2200-acre Scarborough Marsh, which is Maine's largest salt marsh. Heading north on the trail from Pine Point (ME-9) or south from Eastern Road in Scarborough provides access to this 2.5 mile stretch of trail.

"Heading south from Pine Point Road, the trail crosses the York County and Cumberland County boundaries and users can walk/bike from Scarborough, through Old Orchard Beach to Saco, where the current-off-road trail ends at Thornton Academy in Saco, approximately 6 miles from the Pine Point kiosk.

"There are kiosks at 3 parking areas, that give some history and points of interest along the trail. For example, the Eastern Trail is built on the old Eastern line that was built in 1840 and abandoned in 1945. Also, Charles Lindberg flew into the now abandoned Scarborough airport several times. And, a trestle once carried open air trolleys from the rail line to Old Orchard Beach for summer tourists."

" Indian Cellar is an 81-acre municipal park maintained by the Hollis Conservation Commission. Visitors will find 8 different trails encompassing 2.5 miles that lead to the scenic shores of the Saco River and a handful of picnic spots. The preserve offers opportunities for cross-country skiing, fishing, horseback riding, mountain biking, running, snowshoeing, swimming, and hiking. Canoe and kayak access to Indian Cellar is available nearby at Pleasant Point Park in Buxton. The Board supported the acquisition of the Saco River Indian Cellar in 2009.

"Indian Cellar Preserve contains roughly three miles of trails that lead to the mouth of the Saco River. A 1.6-mile perimeter trail wraps around the river, with several additional interior trails. The site divides the towns of and . Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities at the site during all four seasons, including swimming, hiking, fishing, and cross-country skiing.

"The Indian Cellar got its name from the bedrock walls along the Saco River, which were deep and cool enough for people to store their food. Thanks to the town of Hollis, the Land for Maine’s Future program, and several private donors, the site was preserved in 2009 after a developer proposed dividing the land into several expensive lots."

- Pleasant Point Park

"Pleasant Point Park is located on the Simpson Road and is truly the gem of all the Buxton’s Parks. The Park contains some of the most pristine land in Buxton. Enter through the stone gates and walk down Wiggin’s Way, a dirt road that leads you to the most gorgeous point of land overlooking the Saco River. This 60-acre Park is a wonderful place to relax and visit. It is truly a treasure right in our own backyard.

"Follow the walking trail on the south side and you soon come to the ancient burial ground of the early settlers. The sacred ground is well marked with stones around the parameter and simple rocks marking the grave sites. The burial ground is on very high land and has one of the most beautiful vistas of the entire Saco River. Continuing on the same trail weaving back toward the entrance, the foundation of the Woodman home is visible. Imagine the hardship and dangers the Woodman family faced in those early days as they helped shape history as the Salmon Falls village began to prosper.

"The Park provides several picnic tables scatter around the Park, there are NO grills or fire of any type allowed. There is access for hand carry boats, canoes, kayaks and swimming. This area of the Saco River is approximately 50 feet deep (Please note there are no lifeguards on duty). There are several hiking trails, dogs are welcome if leashed and please pick-up after your dog. There is a handicapped accessible portable toilet at the end of Wiggin’s Way. There is limited parking available and please NO snowmobiles or motorized bikes allowed.

"The Park opens at 7 a.m. and closes promptly at. 8 p.m."

Pleasant Point Park History

"Originally called the 'Cyrus Woodman Reservation' Pleasant Point Park was placed in a trust by the Woodman family. In 1923 the Park was given to Appalachian Mountain Club by Mary Woodman.

"In 1945 the AMC gave the Park to the State of Maine.

"In 1959, the town of Buxton received a letter from the State Park Commission saying that they would not entertain the idea of transferring ownership of (Pleasant Point Park) because of the State’s plan to develop the property. However, the plans were not carried out due to the Class “D” (unsuitable for public recreation due to the water quality of the Saco River adjacent to Pleasant Point Park at the time. In 1960 the Buxton Selectmen proposed a lease agreement with the State of Maine Park Commission. At their annual meeting, the townspeople voted it down, again because of the Class “D” designation.

"In 1971 the Town of Buxton entered a 5 year renewable license with the State to use the land with some covenants in place. In June of 1989 the Park was deeded to the Town on Buxton."

Zero-Waste want you to rethink what a trip to the store looks like

By Jessica Roy | Assistant Editor, Utility Journalism
Aug. 23, 2023

"In L.A., most of us have some experience purchasing things by weight. Nuts and dried fruit at Sprouts. Last-minute meals from the hot bar at Whole Foods. Weed at the weed store.

"At a growing number of places around , there’s a new category of bulk products: personal care and home cleaning items such as hand soap, moisturizer, toothpaste tabs, shampoo, laundry pods and all-purpose cleaner.

"They’re called refill stations. Almost all of them are woman-owned small businesses. And they all want you to rethink what a trip to the store looks like.

"Here’s how it works: You bring your own containers from home. Glass or plastic are OK, as long as they’re clean. If you forget them, stores offer a few options for sale. Many also have a basket of donated jars from other customers that you can use.

"An employee will weigh your container and mark that number, known as the tare. Fill up with as much or as little of a product as you want, then bring it back to be weighed again and pay for what you bought. It’s a great way to sample new products and reduce the amount of plastic packaging you consume."

"Mario Guevara, the metro -based Spanish language reporter who built a mass audience with his coverage of immigration raids, was arrested at a protest in DeKalb County on Saturday.

"The DeKalb gathering was one of many across the metro area as thousands took to the streets to protest President Donald Trump’s administration and its immigration enforcement policies.

"Roughly two hours into the rally, police in arrived to prevent demonstrators from marching on the road.

" 'I’m here in Chamblee where the authorities are trying to hold back the protest which is turning a bit violent,' Guevara said in Spanish during a livestream, which has racked up over one million views on Facebook. He could be seen wearing a helmet and a vest that identified him as press.

" 'Don’t touch me,' Guevara later tells a police officer in the video as the feed cuts off.

"Later, amid glitches in the video, Guevara can be hearing saying, 'Officer, officer, I’m with the media.' Moments later, the video shows Guevara had been brought to the ground.

"Online police records show Guevara was booked into DeKalb County Jail at 4:49 p.m. with a charge of 'obstruction of law enforcement officers' and a charge of 'pedestrian walking on or along' a roadway.

"In a statement on its Facebook page, the firm of Diaz & Gaeta Law, which represents Guevara, said it was 'taking all measures to defend Mr. Guevara and protect freedom of speech as provided by the .'

“It has come to our understanding that the reporter Mario Guevara was arrested recently … for merely videotaping the protests today.”

"At least seven other people were arrested at the site of the DeKalb protest, county leaders confirmed Saturday evening."

15 escaped goats disrupt traffic on highway

by Paul Koenig, June 14, 2025

"Maine State Police helped coral 15 goats that escaped from a trailer Saturday afternoon on Interstate 95 in Falmouth.

"The farm trailer had detached from a Toyota pickup truck and came to rest in the median, according to Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine State Police.

"There were no significant injuries to the driver or goats, which disrupted traffic on both sides of the highway.

"Police responded to the detached trailer at approximately 12:41 p.m. Saturday, and the goats slowed northbound traffic for about 45 minutes, Moss said."

Police arrest 2 protesters after ‘’ rally in Portland

by Paul Koenig

"Portland police officers arrested two protesters on Saturday following the 'No Kings' demonstration, a nationwide movement opposing the Trump administration.

"Similar protests were held across the country and in more than 30 communities around Maine, including Bangor, where hundreds of demonstrators gathered at the city’s waterfront. Portland’s demonstrations drew thousands of attendees, according to the Portland Press Herald.

"The Portland protests in Monument Square and Lincoln Park were relatively peaceful, according to the Portland Police Department.

"But following the rally, as police officers were directing traffic at the intersection of Congress and Franklin streets, a Portland woman who was ordered to get onto the sidewalk threw a water bottle that struck a police officer, according to Brad Nadeau, spokesperson for the Portland Police Department.

"Police arrested the woman, Jennie Joan Ferrare, 35, for assault and obstructing a public way.

"As officers were arresting the woman, Tyler J. McGrath of Falmouth 'blew an air horn directly at an officer from a close proximity, causing immediate pain in his ears,' Nadeau said. McGrath, 27, was charged with assault.

"Both were transported to Cumberland County Jail."

One arrested at peaceful “” protest in

"Metro Nashville Police officers arrested a masked counter protester carrying what appeared to be a handgun and a '' flag at the 'No Kings' protest at Bicentennial Park during Saturday’s 'No Kings' protest in Nashville.

"No shots were fired.

"Kase Cosgrove, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and safety volunteer attending the protest, said he approached the man after other protesters told him the man was armed and spitting and shoving people while walking through the crowd.

"Cosgrove said he walked toward the man and saw him tapping on what appeared to be a handgun and pulling it out of its holster to show people he was armed. Cosgrove approached him and attempted to talk to him but three police officers quickly arrived, retrieved the weapon and put the man in handcuffs.

"Cosgrove said the protest — part of a nationwide protest against the Trump administration — has been peaceful and fittingly musical, being in Music City.

"Thousands of people attended the protest, lining the sidewalks along Jefferson Street and Rosa Parks Blvd. and walking through Bicentennial Park after a brief gathering at the park’s amphitheater. Cheers, musical instruments and car horns echoed up and down the street.

"Protesters ranged in age from young adults to the elderly, and many people brought children and dogs.

" 'Everybody else is being chill,' said Cosgrove. ' . . . He was trying to cause problems.'

"Protesters yelled at the man as police put him into an MNPD golf cart. Cosgrove was among them, shouting, 'You got tread on!' "
