Republic P-47D Thunderbolt This classic WW2 fighter is shown on the apron at the Tennessee Museum of Aviation, Sevierville, TN. I think this museum might be unique in that it has not one but TWO P-47s in flying condition, which are painted in similar schemes. This aircraft represents a P-47D-30 'Hun Hunter XVI' flown by Lt Col. Gilbert O. Wymond Jr, 65th Fighter Squadron, USAAF, MTO, 1944

English Electric Lightning T.5 The Lightning was developed from the P.1 research aircraft, and was a fast-climbing Mach 2 interceptor which saw service with both the Royal Air Force and the Royal Saudi Air Force. The power of two reheated Rolls-Royce Avon engines was enough to enable the aircraft to climb at over 20,000 ft/min! This trainer version is unusual for a fighter aircraft in that it had side by side seating (during this era the RAF's trainers all had this feature). The biggest failing of the aircraft was that initial versions had such a small fuel load that it was practically a 'point defence interceptor'. This example is seen at the Newark Air Museum, Nottinghamshire

Curtiss Model D Pusher, 1912 (replica). Glenn Curtiss was engaged, sometimes in a legal sense, in a fight with the Wright Brothers for dominance in the world of early aviation - Curtiss machines had ailerons, rather than the Wright-designed wing warping, for roll control. Although the Model D suffered, as did most of the early pusher designs, from higher drag due to the wide-spaced rear fuselage frame members, it was still a useful machine, performing both the first take-off from a vessel (Nov. 1910) and the first landing (Jan. 1911). This replica is of a 'headless pusher', so called by Curtiss because the earlier forward mounted canard control surfaces were omitted in this model

Goodyear FG-1D Corsair, take off. This aircraft was, like many other Corsairs, built by the Goodyear Co. under licence, hence the US Navy designation FG. A number of Goodyear-built Corsairs were supplied to the Royal Navy under Lend Lease during WW2. The model corresponds to the Vought F4U-1. Corsairs were also built by the Brewster Aeronautical Corporation, but that contract was terminated early. This Corsair is seen taking off from the Rhode Island Air Show.

Panavia Tornado F.3 The Royal Air Force were one of only three air arms to utilise the interceptor version of the Tornado, the others being the Italian and Royal Saudi Air Forces. Ultimately, all three countries replaced the interceptor Tornado with the Eurofighter Typhoon. This preserved example of the F.3 is seen here in the RAF Museum in Hendon.

F.E.8 (flyable replica) Seen here at the Owls Head Transportation Museum in Maine, USA is a replica of a British 'pusher' fighter of WW1. It was constructed in California (and powered by a modern inline engine, rather than the original rotary) then flown across country. This Royal Aircraft Factory design resembled the DH.2 in some respects, but was less manouverable and only slightly faster. In service it was no match for the German Albatross biplanes.

Scottish Aviation (Handley Page) Jetstream T.1 This aircraft is one I know well ! I used to walk past it, most mornings, on my way to/from my office at RAF Finningley, South Yorkshire. Finningley is now a (temporarily closed) civil airport on the outskirts of Doncaster. The Jetstream used to be on the strength of No 6 FTS, RAF, but is now on display at Newark Air Museum, Nottinghamshire. Although built by Scottish Aviation, the aircraft was designed by Handley Page RAFFinningley #aviationlovers

Britten Sheriff, East Midlands International Airport 'Aeropark'. When John Britten died suddenly his last design, a light twin, was c.70% complete, and had been pushed into 'the weeds'. I was Curator of the Aeropark at the time, and was part of a team which viewed the aircraft on the Isle of Wight, and arranged for it to be transported to the museum. Many years later, it now stands on public exhibition, one of the last flowerings of the British 'light twin' #

DC-3 Eastern Airlines, New England Air Museum, Connecticut Eastern Airlines bore the title 'The Great Silver Fleet' on their airliners for some years. They were also a significant user of Douglas's masterpiece, the DC-3. Here we see a fine example in the New England Air Museum in Connecticut. This aircraft was built as a DC-3, but taken over by the USAAF on the production line, and issued as a C-49J. From 1942 to April 1945 it undertook the many duties of a wartime transport, until converted back to a DC-3 and purchased by Eastern Airlines. ,

F-15C Eagle, Massachusetts Air National Guard, Barnes Air National Guard Base, Westfield, Massachusetts, USA. The 104th Fighter Wing, ANG, is a premier Fighter Wing, tasked with the defence of part of the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. They were my 'local' ANG unit, and I often used to see and hear them as F-15s flew over my home. The mighty Eagle is in its final days in Massachusetts, however, as the 104th has been selected to transition to the F-35A Lightning II.

Cessna O-2A Skymaster. This military version of the Cessna 337 Super Skymaster saw active service in Vietnam and other theatres of war in the Forward Air Control role. Versatile, and much loved by its crews, there was also an O-2B 'psyops' version, equipped with powerful loudspeakers and a leaflet dispenser. This O-2A is seen at the Plymouth Airshow in Massachusetts, USA, and is shown with a typical load of white phosporus rockets, used to mark enemy targets. As well as US Armed Forces, they served no less than 14 other nations.
