“This way,” motioned the attendant.

The machine roared into action and I suddenly understood what the old man meant when he said that before night’s end, heads would roll.

As the machine spun, a slender blade appeared. You’d be excused for not having noticed it. They didn’t.

Punchline: And then I woke up.

One of the three families who housed the unhoused was the family that built my current house in 1840, about three or four blocks from where the fire occurred.

He felt like his skin was going to throw up. Such a thing being ridiculous provides no comfort when, so struck by fear that one’s ears go blind and one’s eyes go deaf, the unescaping death scream makes the nerves in the gums go numb and the retching functions of liver, esophagus, and mouth each fail—and as fail-over, the mind presumes the skin as the last vestige of sense, release, and vomit. But the skin did not give up the ghost. It held it within, like useless eyes in a sack.
