For the price of a Switch 2 and a year’s worth of Nintendo Switch Online in CAD, I can order a Gamesir G8+ controller that would work with every device I have, a handful of favourite indie games both mobile and desktop, and an entire iPad Mini 6 which would also be an upgraded mobile photo editing device for me.

Or if you don’t include the iPad; years worth of games, including DRM-free copies of desktop titles, and still have room leftover.

In that vein — I’m glad that Pixelfed exists, and thrilled to see it gain momentum as a fediverse alternative to Instagram. I don’t see myself making much use of it for now though. When I set up my account and opened the app, seeing the Instagram-like layout, my first thought was “I don’t want this anymore.”

I haven’t been active on Instagram for nearly four years, and I really don’t miss the format.

But who knows, maybe Pixelfed will become an essential portfolio piece for photographers.
