As I researched for Livy 21, 28 (elephants crossing the Rhône) I stumbled over the story of Eads Bridge which was first 'tested' by an Elephant because the general public was too afraid to step foot on it. The Scientific American (1889) claims that an Elephant's fear of bridges is well known (and such it was an apt test to see if it would actually step on the bridge). Anyone have information on this fear? art:

I started working on a paper researching and analysing anecdotes, especially in ancient historiography. Are there any compelling studies done on anecdotes which focus on their use as a literary device, or any theoretical studies in English? There is some research done in German, which I'm aware of.
