This week, I remember the passing of my first PhD advisor, Eric Dey. He died of cardiomyopathy— an enlarged heart. It was in the middle of my qualifying exam, and on his way to the 2009 meeting of #ASHE, an organization that has honored both of us with early career awards. He was 47. Eric balanced unconditional support, an endless supply of red ink, & nuggets of affirmation I’ll never forget. By instinct & intention, I share his mentoring style with my own advisees.
