As already mentioned, in Paracas the desert meets the ocean.
There is nothing in between. The small town of Paracas, of course. But in terms of landscape, the beach merges directly into the desert.
But let's not forget the sea. Fantastically beautiful.
And penguins! We were very excited about that! Penguins in the wild!
The most famous sight is of course the so-called candelabra of Paracas; a geoglyph whose shape is actually a little reminiscent of a three-armed candlestick. This approximately 170 metre high carving is over 2000 years old.
・
Image description:
1/3 A group of over a dozen black and white Humboldt penguins stand on a barren rock. Their distinctive shape and the stark contrast of their plumage stand out well against the blue sky behind them. A Peruvian gannet flies in the sky.
2/3 The candelabra of Paracas seen from the sea. Blue ocean in the foreground. A white and red boat enters the picture from the left. In the background the rocky cliffs. Their ochre colour merges directly into dune-like sand hills.
A large geometric figure is carved into the soft sand. It is reminiscentof a three-armed candlestick, or three ears of grain sharing a common stem.
3/3 Turquoise water in the foreground. A rocky island. Cliffs shoot up steeply and form an almost levelled plateau. In the centre of the picture, an almost perfectly semi-circular arch cut out of the stone by wind and water, making the cliff look like a bridge.
Seabirds circle in the sky.

That's quite a change!
After the humid, steamy, deep green Amazon jungle, we arrived in Paracas. The town has a beautiful beach right on the Pacific.
But the beach immediately turns into desert. The desert really does meet the ocean here!

1/2 Adda, the small, white, fluffy creature stands in a dust-dry, ochre-coloured desert landscape. She is wearing a straw hat.
Directly behind her, a few flat stones are piled up to form little towers. In the distance, the flat sandy landscape merges into a few hills.
2/2 A view through two of the piled-up stone towers onto the expanse of the desert landscape.
The angle of view has been chosen so that the perhaps knee-high towers on the left and right edges of the picture make the view look as if it is through a ravine.

The next chapter of our #SouthAmericaJourney begins!
We return by boat from our remote Amazon lodge to Iquitos, fly to Lima and from there, in stages by bus, via Paracas and Nazca to Arequipa.
・
Image description:
A section of a map of Peru.
The towns of Iquitos and Pampa Caño are marked in the far north. A long, curved line connects the towns with the city of Lima. A stylised aircraft icon on the line makes it clear that this is a flight connection between the cities.
From Lima, a dashed line runs south-eastwards near the coastline. The cities of Paracas, Nazca and Arequipa are marked. A stylised tour bus is depicted next to the dotted line.

Garstl's favourite place here at the lodge is definitely the hammock cabin. It is a large, airy round building in which several hammocks
invite you to do sweet nothing.
However, the hut is also used for other purposes. For example, we had our workshop here where we built a blowpipe. Ruspe and Octavio explained everything to us in detail and we were allowed to take the really successful results home with us!

Image description:
1/4 The inside of a sun-flooded, airy wooden cabin. Garstl with his pink
shaggy fur lies in a hammock and laughs into the camera.
2/4 A wide shot of the interiour of the sun-flooded hammock cabin. The room is almost round. A central pillar supports the top of the conical
palm leaf roof. The outer walls are simply wooden beams with mosquito nets in between, so that the room appears completely open. Several hammocks are attached to the central pillar, the other ends of the hammocks are tied to the outer beams.
3/4 Two men are sitting in a corner of the hammock hut. Surrounding them on the floor are tools, light-coloured wood shavings and
natural-coloured raffia bast fibres. One of them is holding a wooden
blowpipe. The other is wrapping raffia around the blowpipe.
4/4 A long shot of the lodge grounds as seen from the river. The bank rises several metres above river level. Stairs lead up from a landing site to the edge of the jungle. The conical palm leaf roof of the hammock hut protrudes from the first green bushes at the edge of the forest.

Adda and Garstl are delighted with their souvenirs from their visit to Pampa Caño, the village near the Antares Amazon Lodge.
The lodge is run entirely by members of the indigenous community from this village. It is a real pleasure to listen to them as they passionately show and explain the wonders and natural beauty of their homeland to us guests.

Sitting at the table are Adda, a small creature with fluffy white fur, and Garstl with his pink shaggy fur. In front of them is an open travel diary and handcrafted animal figurines: a jaguar, various birds and a toad.

Adda loves our lodge! The complex of several palm leaf-covered wooden cabins is built entirely on stilts - as protection against floods and all kinds of creatures that are at home in the jungle.
The cottages are connected to each other by a system of covered walkways and bridges, so that the entire small village appears to float above the ground.
・
Image description:
1/5 Adda, a small, fluffy creature with white fur stands on a covered walkway made of wood, which branches out in different directions in the depth of the picture.
2/5 Another of the covered bridges. It leads straight into the depths of the picture, where it ends at an airy cabin.
3/5 A footbridge branches out in the centre of the picture. One branch leads to a cabin, another part ends in the background in front of another cottage.
4/5 Part of the lodge seen from the outside. Two wooden cabins on stilts. In front of them is a palm leaf-covered, roofed footbridge connecting the two cabins.
5/5 The main building of the lodge. Also a simple hut on stilts. A staircase with several steps leads up to the entrance door. To the left and right of the building, footbridges lead to other parts of the lodge.

We finally arrived at our home for the next five nights: The Antares Amazon Lodge!
Garstl and Adda are already very excited! And our lodge couldn't be more perfect! Modest, simple, super cosy!
Picture description:
1/4 Garstl with his pink shaggy fur stands in front of a simple wooden cabin built high on posts. Stairs lead up to the front door. Next to it is the lettering ‘Antares Amazon’ in large letters.
2/4 Another simple wooden cabin, also on stilts. Instead of window glass, shimmering green mosquito nets are stretched in front of the windows.
3/4 The inside of the wooden cabin. A large king-size bed is freshly made up with bright white linen sheets. A white mosquito net is strung over the bed.
4/4 An aerial view of the area. A complex of seven simple, palm leaf-roofed cabins is located directly between the river and the dense, green jungle. The individual huts are connected by covered walkways.
Handwritten notes are written on the picture next to some of the cabins: Our cabin, lounge, kitchen, hammock cabin.
A text note at the edge of the picture: Thank you, Antares Amazon Lodge www.amazonperujungle.com for allowing us to use this picture.

The flight to Iquitos was already spectacular.
But the journey to our lodge is even more adventurous.
Over a slippery plank on the muddy shore, we have to cross a ship, on
the other side of which our narrow boat is moored.
(2nd pic; the boat on the right with the blue roof).
And, of course, the first downpour hits us. Rainforest. It's called a
rainforest!
・
Image description:
1/4 Muddy bank of the murky brown Amazon. Shaky wooden planks connect the bank with a simple ferry boat. A person with a rucksack is balancing on the wooden plank.
2/4 Two very narrow, elongated boats are moored on the river side of the ferry, one has a roof covered with palm leaves, the other has a blue tin roof.
3/4 The wide, brown Amazon. In the far background, the other bank can be recognised in dark green. Absurd towers of clouds stand over the jungle and reach high into the sky. Curtains of rain fall down.
4/4 A portrait photo of me: a man in his forties. His long brown hair with grey strands tied back in his neck. His face is unshaven. He looks adventurously into the camera.

The Plaza de Armas in Iquitos.
Iquitos is a lively city. The rattle of motorised rickshaws can be heard from everywhere.
The unique thing about the city is that it is so far away from civilisation in the Amazon basin that it can only be reached by plane or boat across the river.
・
