Reason: The AUKUS agreement is NOT in Australia’s interest.
1. we have more than 8 million square kilometers to patrol. Submarines are an ineffective 1950’s solution. There is ample evidence that robotics, communication and software, alongside innovations such as 3D additive manufacturing/printing, are having a MUCH bigger impact on military issues than a few submarines could HOPE to have. Submarine drones are routeinely being used/for exploration, monitoring of undersea cables, search&rescue, etc. Ship drones have sunk 5 Russian ships and attacked bridges in Ukraine. Ground drones are supporting front-line troops. UAVs are commonplace in all war theatres. We can achieve a much better outcome for a MUCH smaller outlay.

2. The US under Donald Trump will NOT be performing the traditional ‘backstop’ role ascribed to it. The US is becoming a bigger threat to the world than almost anything else we face. It is not sensible to throw money at a hostile regime whose modus-operandi is self-aggrandisement, self-enrichment, studied ignorance, greed, promoting instability and aligning with ‘rogue’ nations such as Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, etc. The US is attacking important foundations such as NATO and the five eyes alliance. Trump's effect on the world will outlast his presidential term and overshadow all the “AUKUS years.” Under Trump, it is clear that America does not respect its former partners and allies. Australia cannot trust America.

Request: We therefore ask the House to immediately invalidate the AUKUS agrement.

Petition EN4686 - Use Surplus Cruise Ships to Help Solve the Housing Crisis

After COVID, the cruise industry across the world is discarding billions of dollars’ worth of cruise ships. A brand-new ship with 9000 passenger cabins is about to be towed directly from the shipyard to the scrapyard. This egregious failure of capitalism can be redeemed. A cruise ship is a self-contained town with (generally) high-quality accommodation, entertainment, shops, sickbays, etc. A ship also provides appropriate power generation, waste treatment, etc. Cruise ships can be tied up at all major cities and used to quickly bring housing capacity ‘online.’ Brisbane’s Portside dock is also about to be decommissioned due to purely commercial reasons. This facility appears ready-made to support a long-term ship tie-up. There are probably similar unused/under-used facilities in many Australian major cities. There is currently no other proposition that offers such a quick response to the housing crisis as this. Even if only used as a temporary solution, this would be better than nothing. There is precedent: cruise ships have elsewhere been repurposed as floating hotels, hospitals and even university campuses.
