For background, my grandfather was a typesetter who ran the presses for the Greeley (CO) Tribune for several years after WWII, so I came by my fondness for print journalism naturally.

The days of the "ink-stained wretch" are ever more numbered, I guess. I'll miss the feel and smell of newsprint once it's finally gone.

Thankfully we still have stalwarts like the NYT that keep soldiering on, even as local papers not so slowly fade away.

The newest increase raises the price for home delivery of the #DenverPost to more than $5/day. The cover price is only $3, which leads me to believe that the parent company is deliberately trying to kill the print version (esp. since a digital sub is only $16/month). This seems to be a continuation of Alden's hallmark job slashing.

I know #newspapers are in trouble everywhere, but deliberately trying to kill part of your own brand seems like a pretty poor marketing strategy.

1/ I took a sad but necessary step this week in canceling my print subscription to the #DenverPost.

As a #journalism grad I've always believed in supporting local newspapers--in fact up until this week I subscribed to print versions of 3 papers (incl. the Sunday NYT), and have digital subs for 3 others.

But ever since "vulture" capital firm Alden Global bought the DP the amount and quality of content has declined markedly. Meanwhile their print subscription prices have gone through the roof...

My heart is broken over the events in #ColoradoSprings, although I wish I could say I was surprised.

I've lived in Colorado my whole life, and Colorado Springs has always been a toxic stew of hateful Christian fundamentalism and right-wing militarized rage. It's a beautiful city, but it's overrun with paranoid and angry people.

Add in the "grooming" incitement from politicians like #LaurenBoebert, and tragedies like this become inevitable.
