I just wrote a new blog post, called “Choose Boring T̶e̶c̶h̶n̶o̶l̶o̶g̶y̶ Culture”, on the difference between formal/org culture and informal/bottoms-up culture, what *actually* makes work fun, and where to invest your innovation tokens.

Amazon is *very* proud of its #flywheel: first, they subsidized customers, luriing in sellers. Then they demanded lower prices, luring more buyers. With more customers, more sellers piled in. Faster the flywheel spins, creating the #EverythingStore:

...of course it matters, esp for effective use of memory, but just as, or more important =
- effective use of caching
- DB optimisation
- infrastructure optimisation
- choice of programming language (e.g. Java is ~10x faster than Python)
I never saw "clean code" & performance in conflict, but solutions to diff problems (app speed vs dev speed)
I assume @cmuratori is arguing you can have both at the same time? I look forward to his vid series.
But, with a typical web app how important is code optimisation? 👇

A brilliant inaugural conference last year, the best I've been to in ages.
It'll be even better this year, especially if you submit a a talk 😀
For new presenters, speaker workshops are being organised. Some of the best talks last year were from people who'd never talked before

ChatGPT's been in the news a lot recently, with some even claiming it will allow 1 developer do the work of 10. @jasongorman spends an hour with GPT-4 test-driving code for a real-world problem and sorts the reality from the hype. https://youtu.be/Oy-NvZFi8Wk

I've just posted my first update since joining Sourcegraph six months ago, "Cheating is All You Need". In it I introduce AI-backed coding assistants, which are the biggest change I've seen in 35 years as an engineer. Enjoy! https://about.sourcegraph.com/blog/cheating-is-all-you-need

The development of AI is as fundamental as the creation of the microprocessor, the personal computer, the Internet, and the mobile phone. It will change the way people work, learn, travel, get health care, and communicate with each other. https://gatesnot.es/3FIamPU

OpenAI may have tested GPT-4 on the training data: we found slam-dunk evidence that it memorizes coding problems that it's seen. Besides, exams don't tell us about real-world utility: It’s not like a lawyer’s job is to answer bar exam questions all day. https://aisnakeoil.substack.com/p/gpt-4-and-professional-benchmarks
