Blind Chance (1987) director Krzysztof Kieślowski : I haven't seen much by Kieslowski but after seeing this I really need to explore more of his films. Some of the plot points had to do with Poland under "Communism" so the specifcs went over my head on this first watch but what's important here are the emotions the main character is feeling. Tells the same story in 3 different ways and shows how something simple like catching or missing a train can drastically alter the course of your life. Heavily censored by the Polish government and while much of it was recovered and restored, one scene remains lost. Hugely influential on "Run, Lola, Run".

Heretic (2024) director Scott Beck, Bryan Woods : If there's one reason to watch this movie, it's Hugh Grant's performance. Starts as a tense chamber piece contained in the big old house of a mysterious man and the two young Mormon missionary girls who quickly become uncomfortable and realize he may not be who he sees. While their are some amazing monologues, Grant's character becomes a bit tedious with all his r/Atheism edgelord dialogue and the film writes itself into a corner. Similar in tone to Barbarian

Se7en (1995) director David Fincher: Newly restored by Fincher for a 4K UHD release. It's amazing to see how influential this has been over 30 years The cinematography, writing, directing and cast all leading to the inevitable and shocking conclusion. While some of the writing reveals the casual homphobia of the 90s via Brad Pitt's character and Paltrow's character is a bit boxed in ( pun intended ) It's remarkable how this movie brought back so much of the 70s to the 90s and how in control Fincher was as a young director. The restoration utilizes a cooler color palette yet stays true to the original and updates it for modern home viewing.

As Tears Go By (1988) director Wong Kar-Wai : revisted Wong Kar-Wai's debut for the first time in years. At the Peak of Hong Kong's New Wave this film merges the Hong Kong crime films and triad entanglements with an early display Kar-Wai's romanticism and longing that he would showcase in Chungking Express and In The Mood For Love. Features a Canto-pop rendition of the Giorgio Moroder-penned "Take My Breath Away" that Tony Scott made so iconic in Top Gun just 2 years earlier.

Lost Highway(1997) dir. David Lynch - Neo-Noir reinvented for the 90s by David Lynch a decade after he did the same the 80s and after a brief slump. Tapping into the gothic elements of 90s alternative and blending Noir, Horror, Road Movies and Mystery straight out of his subconscious in a way that is dark, sexy, personal and always compelling. Paves the way not only for Mulholland Drive but of a new generation of filmmakers to come.

Eraserhead(1977) dir. David Lynch - Lynch's debut and one of the original "Midnight Movies" as written about by J. Hoberman & Jonathan Rosenbaum in their box of the same title. One of the most sought after, hard to find vhs tapes prior to the Criterion Collection giving it the necessary treatment. One of Kubrick's favorite and his inspiration for The Shining, on re-watch you can even see how the use of texture and shadow influenced Ridley Scott's approach to Alien among other filmmakers. It all started and you can see this as Lynch's mission statement for his entire career.

Ghost World(2001) dir. Terry Zwigoff - Released in a transitionary period for culture when the new millennium was still taking shape, this unique gem only gets better with age. Colors are vibrant and pop in a way that was difficult to convey on home video when this originally came, subtly reproducing a comic book page in this coming of age hang out movie piece of heartwarming outsider art. Though ambiguous, I see the ending as a happy one.

Black Rain(1989) dir. Ridley Scott - Late 80s crime film from Scott starring Michael Douglas and featuring lots of the shadows of Blade Runner and all the Orientalism but none of the heart. Problematic at times but has some strong scenes and performances but is unable to come together as a whole as Thelma and Louise would 2 years later.
