Honestly playing William and Sly 2024 ( https://store.steampowered.com/app/2459620/William_and_Sly/ ) has absolutely thrown me for a loop. Brand new game and yet the way it's designed makes it feel *old*.

Its pace is slower and it prefers to give you a lot more downtime than modern titles for one, and it asks more of you as a player as well, but the thing I think contributes to that feel is that it asks questions we don't really ask anymore.

"Why shouldn't I make a game that's 90 percent skyrim jank mountain climbing and actually take it seriously as a mechanic?", "Why shouldn't I make the way you beat enemies for real also the currency for fast travel?", "Why shouldn't I make a search-action where your main means of progression is casting spells by foraging the ingredients you need to cast them, as if you're opening an arcane combination lock?", "Why shouldn't I make a game whose smallest loop is something loop theory would consider a 'mid-term loop' and not a 'core loop'?", etc. It asks *weird ass questions*, asks them in places we've generally stopped looking for new stuff in, and it answers them in ways that are distinctly from a perspective you can tell still has the ideational sensibilities from back when games were still seen as a brand new medium full of unanswered questions (and frankly, it's absolutely right to think this way, because the medium is *still* full of unanswered questions and unexplored space). We need to be making more games like this.

I don't know who needs to hear this right now, but I feel it needs to be out here regardless.

The right's existence is entirely defined by predation. They'll spin it off as making them 'superior' somehow, but the truth isn't hard to see. The life of a predator is defined wholly by how profoundly pathetic it is.

Every other animal can eat rocks and grass forever and have no conflict. But predators? They feed on suffering. They *need* conflict to live. That's why they'll talk shit at you but as soon as you leave they'll follow you like a lost puppy. They know that if they don't have a you around to hurt, they're *nothing*. Their entire existence is defined by hollow demands to be seen as superior, for feeding off of those who are better than them.

It's why they react so psychotically when you bite back; they know that if they actually got their just desserts, it would break every single brittle bone in their body. It's why they freak out when you have your pronouns in your bio; if you're happy, what is there for them to eat? It's why they lose their minds when you make a safe space for people you love; they know deep down that you having the power to lock the door on them is a fundamental threat to their existence. And no matter what bullshit they spout, *they can't take that power away from you.*

For all the bluster about natural selection, they never stop to actually look at the world around them. We live in an age where you can talk to someone across the planet and see the soul you share over a common interest. We live in an age where you can see art in a hundred different voices, with a thousand new things to learn and discover. We live in an age where you live to 80 at minimum... not 40 at best. We live here, in this age beyond our ancestors' wildest dreams, because we looked at natural selection -- took a long, honest look -- and we *broke* that disgusting motherfucker all the way over our knee.

How? *Caring.* *Caring* is how.

Caring enough to know that smallpox needed to end. Caring enough to know that Hitler's regime is *unacceptable*. Caring enough to learn that space and time aren't separate but embraced in a harmony beyond both. Caring enough to give wolves shelter and connection in their time of weakness, to learn how they speak and how to heal them. Caring enough to learn how to cultivate plants for cold you can't see yet. A cell in the far past, caring enough to realize that killing mitochondria, constantly on the run looking for a new victim, *isn't the life it wanted to live.*

Since the beginning of time, what makes us not just meat, not just human, but *alive*, has been our ability to care about anything, and everything. Care has always been our greatest strength; the water we use to cut the cruelty written in the rocks and dust of the world; the power to know a better future, and to *make it.*

So, moving forward, remember this:

__You are allowed to speak your mind.__
__**You are allowed to defend yourself.**__
__**And you are allowed to defend your friends.**__

Make safe spaces. Have your pronouns and flags displayed. Cherish those close to you. Check in with whatever movements you can within your means.

And after you've done all that: Make sure you catch those slimy bastards if they try to slip in through the door. Because you're the only ones who can make the future out of what we've got today, and all they can fixate on is the past.
