But WOW, what a great cover by Nestor Redondo (artist) and Tatjana Wood (colorist)!

Reminds me of some recent root canal surgery I had to endure...

Weird Secret Origins (published August 2004)

Nice variety collection of origin stories of some of the early DC weird/supernatural characters from the 1940's to the 1970's. Featuring Dr. Fate, Enchantress, Animal Man, Metamorpho, Congorilla, El Diablo, the Bizzaros, and The Spectre.

I like the era style dialogue and the matter-of-fact acceptance of extraordinary powers and inexplicable circumstances in these stories. Plus, gotta love that DEVO-like wackiness of the Bizarro World!

This is a very good reprint production that is sturdily bound with crisp coloring. Worth checking out if you like the offbeat.

Heavy Metal and an H.P. Lovecraft special ! How could I pass this up?

Well, the cover is awesome! And cool contributions by a few of my favorite Heavy Metal artists (Moebius, Druillet). The adaptation of "The Dunwich Horror" was OK. However, there are several stories that have a tenuous relationship to Lovecraftian topics. So overall a bit disappointing. Still, cool cover!

A mated pair of ravens often visited our land in the high desert of #Arizona. I called them Heckle and Jeckle (after the cartoon characters, who were wise-cracking magpies), as the male raven (Heckle) would tease my dog. Heckle was carefully curious, and would follow me around on the land while I was working or hiking.

I have not seen Heckle in several weeks now, although Jeckle (the female) and their young ravens visit us daily. Perhaps Heckle has moved on, or passed on...

In his memory, here is a portrait I drew of the curious, teasing and noble Heckle.

Only 2 issues in, and this series and creative team are nailing it and exceeding expectations! It is so good to see the development of Stephen and Clea Strange, both as a couple and as complementary sorcerous forces.

Some favorite highlights in this issue:

- The Eye of Agamotto is a being unto itself, as it floats and glances and reacts to situations, and of course is an ever-present active extension of Strange's thoughts / intentions / actions... Love it!
- Clea and Strange traveling down into the Dream Dimension by "dropping through the real into the hypothetical, sinking through layers of reality grown soft and soporific..." is simply magickal (with some Gaiman-esque Sandman nods).
- Invocation of a rare spell - Bromagdon's Ruby Rain!

Another zany issue of House of Mystery (171, Dec. 1967, with cool cover art by Nick Cardy), featuring Robby Reed as the boy who can change into unusual and unexpected heroes using the Dial H for Hero device.

In this issue, at the evil scientist Doc Morhar's laboratory, a chemical accident occurs which shrinks Robby and evil gang into a microbe world. To combat the gang and the malevolent microbe creatures, Robby dials HERO and changes into the flying King Viking, then Robby Go-Go with super dance moves, and then Whirl-I-Gig with razor arms and spinning legs.

Check out Robby Go-Go dancing the "Frug" and the "Monkey"! Sockamagee!

Not to be outdone, in the backup story check out Martian Manhunter riding a "missile". Whoa There!
