All those years of listening to Kurzweil talk about the Singularity, and I never thought it would manifest itself in the form of machine-reprocessed junk drowning out human-created content. It’s not that the machines are getting smarter, not at all, but the humans are making themselves dumber by becoming dependent on output of algorithms that cannot be prevented from making mistakes at high speed and that are optimized to present their errors with increasing verisimilitude, but still wrong.

Attention: Trump is an incompetent fool who damages everything and everyone he touches. Climate change is very very real and we need to do far more to address it. General AI is *not* at all yet real and all we have so far are heavily curated prediction algorithms that are still prone to dangerous errors. Taking care of each other is necessary and is its own reward. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

There was nothing you could have done to avoid this. But you didn't stop.
I stopped and set my flashers to keep others from also running it over.
It didn't last long. I called 911 and they called Animal Control but they didn't get there in time and there was nothing they could do anyway. I rolled it from the road when it passed.
It had big brown eyes.

Commercial enterprises care more about profits and build systems to maximize these. Are these approaches incompatible? No, but the window for overlap in #HPC and #AI for academia and hyperscale commerce was brief and may have closed. Also you have to decide how to spend your time in this world, and he is moving on. https://mast.hpc.social/@glennklockwood/114832950520089114

To my mind it’s a positive feature and not a bug that we have programs like https://nairrpilot.org/ to soak this interest up. Scaling GPUs at universities at the rate that they are scaling up in industry is not possible, in my opinion.
Counterpoint: These (e.g., AI) use cases are popular and it's the job of universities to explore them.

17.6.2025 16:31Does anyone have an opinion on the merits of restricting access to GPU performance counters in HPC cluster settings and the options for...An increasing number of our computer science)students are asking for access to the performance counters for our NVIDIA gpus. It seems we have the choice of enabling this for everyone or for administrative users only (i.e., there’s not an equivalent of the “perf group” approach we can use on our cpu nodes).
The risk of enabling for everyone is that it allows side channel attacks. The “fix” that NVIDIA put in place 6 years(!) ago as described in https://developer.nvidia.com/nvidia-development-tools-solutions-err_nvgpuctrperm-permission-issue-performance-counters seems very clunky to me. 1/2
