I love this mention in an author credit statement. Also, of course, the article is incredibly useful.

A. M. Scheel and P. M. Isager contributed equally
to the manuscript, and the order of their authorship was
determined by executing the following commands in R:

set.seed(7998976/5271)
x <- sample(c(“Anne”, “Peder”), 1)
print(paste(“The winner is”, x, “!”))

Stats folks, especially epidemiologists and climate scientists and others used to working with “big data” - please share recommendations for a simple tutorial for understanding logistic regression, odds ratios etc. I am pretty good with R, but am not confident interpreting my results. Happy to look at free references but quality of explanation is more important than cost.

Like IRBs, they'll be staffed by inexperienced & under-trained employees following rules by rote without understanding the research they are ostensibly overseeing. Like IRBs they will be understaffed, hence slow, & will still miss egregious errors by high-profile researchers who can write around the rules, while impeding the progress of junior researchers with less clout.

Methodological review should be done by peers as part of the funding & publication processes, not by the institution. (2/2)

This article by @lakens ( doi.org/10.1038/d41586-022-045) suggests a need for methodological review boards. It is well-intended and, in a perfect world would be quite reasonable. But having experienced 20 years of real existing review boards (IRBs) in the US I can say with certainty that methodological review boards will not work out well for most researchers here. (1/2)

I like this blogpost from @Iris (and the therein linked video from @emilymbender). I personally don’t assign typical essays - when I assign them, I try to get them to be much more spontaneously about events and discussions that happened in a particular class. I just don’t feel that the traditional book report style essay would be worth the time needed to grade even if done 100% legit.

Here’s a nice paper that uses an innovative method to explore characterization of facial emotion and finds results consistent with Feldman Barrett and colleagues’ work suggesting that facial expressions of emotion aren’t nearly as consistent or universal as we’d like them to be for e.g. AI face reading apps.

I'm happy to see this paper come out. I played a comparatively small role in writing it, and it is a failure to replicate work I did some years ago. One might expect this to be disappointing or frustrating, but it's not. We did the original paper the best we could, and it was a good paper. It just turns out we were very likely wrong. Even still, by failing to replicate the original finding I think we learned something new, and interesting. Science moves forward.

Professorship in Public Health

The department of Public Health at Purdue University is hiring for a senior (tenure eligible) position (Associate or Full Professor). I am not affiliated with the department but I am selfishly interested in encouraging people to apply, especially those who work in epidemiology, environmental health, and/or anything related to noise pollution.

Musing on Twitter & Followers

Am I the only who is *not* looking to replicate on the network from there? I've found many of the same people here through hashtags and friends of friends, but also many new people the same way. My Mastodon feed is more pleasant and interesting, maybe due to and less aggressive . I wonder whether the algorithm limited my options of who to follow (intentionally or otherwise) to maximize (and thus stress).

Dealing with hate in the Fediverse (video link)

For folks new to the fediverse, this 2 yr old video (~28 min) describes how a decentralized/federated network can better deal with hateful people and groups than the big centralized companies. Very informative, optimistic, yet not promoting a panacea (CW the video contains some slurs and reference to violence):

In less than a week since jumping over from a commercial microblogging site I‘ve seen more posts than I expected on arguing that eventually we‘re going to need some kind of to sort feeds, but that’s ok because it can be open source. But I’m thinking I don’t want an algorithm. I don’t want to outsource my decisions to anyone. Give me all the toots I sign up for and let *me* choose which to look at. Anyone else feeling this way?
