Bloat in products can cause poor user experiences, increased time to delivery, increased cost in maintenance, and higher interest on technical debt.

Bloat in organizations can cause misalignment, poor decision making, confusion over roles, increase overall cost while decreasing revenue.

Adding roles to an organization is analogous to adding features to a product.

The decision to add must be driven by a need. It must also be paired with an evaluation of the existing system.

I engage with teams and leadership to build just enough of what input suggests your customers want, measure it, take your next best guess and repeat.

From getting business context to the people writing code, pair-writing product hypotheses and experiments, creating feedback loops for the people outside of product & engineering, to guiding development practices, decisions and expertise: my job is vast, but it isn't what 95% of people recognize as "agile" any longer.

Scrum Masters are stand-ins, development practices are completely lost, delivery is the only focus and no one on the floor has an ounce of influence, ownership or power.

It's time to move on.

Sprints, estimation & capacity planning are not going to necessarily save you from poor communication, lack of alignment, unclear responsibilities, and too much upfront planning.

They might help, but they also may be too much overhead for the direct gain you’ll get from them.

These departments are most likely misunderstood throughout the organization, have very little boundaries and possibly a lack of internal coaching or leadership.

Skill matrices, cross-departmental coaching and mentoring can go a long way. But first, if you see it - check in with the people at the ground level. They may need to know someone out is seeing their pain.

Complex systems with rigid power structures and large insecurities adopted practices that are anti-agile while calling it agile. Many agile folk hit a ceiling - jumped on the bandwagon.

Doesn't mean it's agile.

If you have a PMO, I seriously doubt that you have any agility at all. I have never (in a decades-long career) seen a PMO "manage high-value work quickly and deliver results faster." In fact, they add bureaucracy and anti-agile practices that slow things down considerably. 1/2

Agility within a team has near zero effect on the value delivered if the business is still in deadlines & long term planning mode. Lean delivery of decisions made months or years ago is not agile.

Personal experience is entrenched with personal bias - teaching has the ability to build empathy & challenge your own viewpoints while building & honing skills
