For those looking to extend Dry January or move off of Ambien or other prescriptions, cannabis can be a useful tool. But, mindfulness needs to be a part of this practice of substitution to maximize benefits and reduce harms. In part 3 of my mindful consumption series, I give practice advice on what to do (and not do) if you are looking to cannabis as a substitute for alcohol and/or prescription drugs. Enjoy!

"All use is abuse". This is a common trope when it comes to illegal drugs. But, what happens when a once illegal substance becomes legal? We don't accept that all alcohol use is abuse, so now that the legal status of cannabis is changing, the way we talk about use needs to change too. In part two of my mindful consumption series, I revisit how we have traditionally defined various types of cannabis use and make suggestions for a brand new cannabis use typology. https://www.mypersonalplants.com/articles/part-ii-rethinking-cannabis-use-typology-beyond-the-dsm

Absolutely! “Overdose” simply means taking more than you intended and having a negative outcome. Cannabis overdoses are NOT fatal, because cannabis does not impact the part of the brain that regulates breathing. But, a cannabis overdose can cause ⬆️ heart rate, anxiety and uncomfortable feelings of disassociation. If you or someone you’re with experiences an overdose, drink plenty of water, eat some food, and watch or listen to something familiar. It will pass.

1. Eating it is not the same as smoking it. Effects can take 1-2 hours to occur, can last much longer, and can provide a more intense experience.
2. Many beverages have "fast acting" formulas so that you feel the effects in more like 15-20 min. These might be better for titrating dose.
3. Speaking of dose, ask how much THC is in it. A standard dose is 10mg, but for many, 3-5mg will do.
Enjoy!
