I wish I had more time to talk to the 100 people that lived there, who are probably sick of the Sebaldian pilgrims and morbid onlookers on their eventual fate. Even if their home will be under the waves in a 100 years, it is still a place of life in the face of entropy.

...I've come to think more and more about how when places are made in our heads from the outside, the experience of visiting is imprinted with that same outside, that may contort but remains persistently on contact with the Real.

'The Last Grave' of the old All Saints church in Dunwich, which fell into the sea in 1919, belonging to a Jacob Forster, who was buried in 1758. With 1-3m of coastal erosion every year, it is only a matter of short geological time before it collapses with the cliff it rests on.

Mark Fisher defines the Eerie as a presence where there should be nothing, or nothing when there should be presence. The now-nothingness of the eroded Suffolk coast has invited in something unknown and alien, be it terrifying or alluring.

Brian Eno, for Ambient 4: On Land wrote: "the landscape has ceased to be a backdrop for something else to happen in front of; instead everything that happens is a part of the landscape. There is no longer a sharp distinction between foreground and background."

...Pyramids, arches and obelisks are melting pillars of snow. Not even those who have found a place amidst the heavenly constellations have perpetuated their names: Nimrod is lost in Orion, and Osiris in the Dog Star... To set one's name to a work gives no one a title to be remembered, for who knows how many of the best of men have gone without a trace? The iniquity of oblivion blindly scatters her poppyseed and when wretchedness falls upon us one summer day like snow..." W. G. Sebald

"As a doctor, who saw disease growing and raging in bodies, he understood mortality better than the flowering of life. To him it seems a miracle that we should last so much as a single day. There is no antidote, he writes, against the opium of time. The winter sun shows how soon the light fades from the ash, how soon night enfolds us. Hour upon hour is added to the sum Time itself grows old....

One of the people making the '50 churches' claim about Dunwich is W. G. Sebald, a German writer who traverses the Suffolk coast & connects place, human history and musings on philosophy.

'The Rings of Saturn' encompasses a rambling travel diary, strange dreams, and interjections about historical events that the smallest thing may remind him of. There's also meditation on Thomas Browne, a doctor who wrote on the scientific and esoteric in the 1600s.

You can often find the claim that Dunwich had 50 churches at its peak, but is actually more like 10. One of the few remaining ruins of the lost city is Greyfriars Monastery, much of which was made of flint found on Dunwich beach. Established in the 13th century, this Franciscan friary went the way of all the other monasteries in 1539.

"Dunwich is not even the ghost of its dead self; almost all you can say is that consists of the mere letters of the old name. The coast, up and down, for miles has been, for more centuries that I presume to count, gnawed away by the sea. All the grossness of its positive life is now at the bottom of the German Ocean, which moves for ever, like a ruminating beast, an insatiable, indefatigable lip. Few things are so melancholy... there is a presence in what is missing..." Henry James

We walked the roughly 10 miles up to Dunwich, a town that was once a significant medieval port city, suffered great storms in the 13th and 14th centuries, and now is only a small village as the cliffs continue to crumble into the sea.

It was a favourite haunt of Melancholic Victorians™, including Henry James, who would have been able to see one of it's last churches, All Saints, which fell into the sea in 1919 (you can look up pictures of it!)

James' setting of 'Seaburgh' is a veil for Aldeburgh, a small town that became a significant port after the dissolution of the monasteries. Like many other Suffolk coastal towns undergoing erosion, surrounded by flat expanses of heath and beach, a perfect place to invite the eerie in.

M. R. James' short stories A Warning to the Curious and Oh Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad, two of his most famous horror tales, both feature objects found along the Suffolk coast and carry a terrible, eerie power from their buried history, inviting in a retributive violence to those who dare to unearth them in the present.
