I started playing with a new (to me) series of tooltip interactions in a hex map in my latest story for USAFacts.
You can trigger the tooltip on big screens by hovering with your mouse or accessing the map with your "TAB" key and then using arrow keys to navigate individual states.
On small screens, hitboxes are small, so I opted to trigger tooltips via a slider which lists states in alphabetical order.
Curious what #dataviz and #a11y folks may think!

The first tackles the record-breaking 7 month wait for either approval or denial on new Social Security disability benefit applications: https://usafacts.org/data-projects/disability-benefit-wait-time/
The second is about the approval rate when applying for disability benefits, particularly when several levels of appeal are possible: https://usafacts.org/data-projects/disability-benefit-process

Here’s how I’m thinking of CW on Mastodon: y’know on Netflix, when you scroll around looking for something to watch. And sometimes you read the description or watch the trailer for a show before you get started because maybe you’re just not in the mood for a comedy or a thriller?
It’s like that. CW gives me a preview of what I’m about to engage in before I’ve started reading (because disengaging once I’ve started reading is hard). It’s helping me set healthy boundaries 💖

And for my friends who may not be into a zooming/panning map, we got you. Toggle off the animations in the Settings menu (⚙️) in the upper right-hand corner 😊
(If you already have your device set to reduce motion, animations are off by default)

Since it's election day and I have yet to share this here, please enjoy my team's latest #project from USAFacts: https://usafacts.org/data-projects/2022-midterm-map
We aimed to create a tool that would show you not just *who* is on your ballot this election, but the geographic area where folks are responsible for voting on each item on your ballot.
You'll also find data on how things are going in those areas like edu, air quality, crime & more.
Made with #d3, #svelte & #mapbox

This may vary by instances, but I’m curious if there’s a cultural norm re: instance topics on Mastodon
Example: the server I’m on is focused around data viz & related tech topics. If I’m understanding things correctly, all of my public posts will show up in the “local” section for anyone else in my instance.
Would it be bad form to post more than the occasional bit about things unrelated to the instance topic since it would show up in the local feed? #help

I've been mostly lurking there for a while instead of participating.
I'm hoping that Mastodon's (seemingly?) slower/gentler pace will bring me back to engaging with great people online in a healthier way 💖
