You may be interested to know that I am a cosponsor of the Equality Act in the previous session of Congress, a bill to ensure LGBTQ+ individuals are more broadly protected at the federal level. This legislation would make several changes to federal law to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in education, employment, housing, credit, and federal jury service. This legislation would also amend existing federal law to prohibit discrimination in public accommodations on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

I also cosponsored additional measures to ensure that LGBTQ+ individuals can live safely and with dignity, including the LGBTQ+ Panic Defense Prohibition Act and the Transgender Bill of Rights resolution. The LGBTQ+ Panic Defense Prohibition Act would ban the use of "gay panic" and "trans panic" defenses in federal court, as these defenses attempt to excuse crimes like murder or assault by arguing that the victim's gender identity or sexual orientation provoked the defendant's violent reaction. The Transgender Bill of Rights resolution calls on the federal government to protect and codify the rights of transgender and nonbinary individuals by amending the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include gender identity and amending Title IX to clarify that it protects students from discrimination based on gender identity and sex characteristics.
