Does anyone have a good explanation on why so many #universities in the #uk use Microsoft as their "everything" solution? Email, office software, instant communication, phone, video calls, cloud storage... And more interestingly what is the average cost per university community member?

so, we were just hit with news on the new "voluntary leave programme" at the University of Sussex, due to the shitshow that is core funding for #highereducation in the #uk and a big drop in student n#

Past being angry, I would like to know if there are other Unis in the same situation and if people are already past the shock and thinking about what to do to navigate this?

How will the "remainers" (seems we use this term too much in this country) cope with the extra workload, and how due we prevent a downward spiral of "needs for cut -> less people to work -> worst student experience -> less matriculation -> more need for cuts, etc"

📍 The workshop will take place at University of Sussex Library, Brighton, Nov 20-22 2024 from 9 AM to 6 PM.

💷 The cost of the workshop is GBP 150, as we need to cover travel/accommodation costs from instructors!

I never thought I would write something like this.. but after the twitter explosion(implosion?) I learned about mastodon and have been enjoying the experience here so far (and the idea of decentralised systems, my god, so good) ... But as fate would have it, I am also using #linkedin (even though I don't like the whole idea/system it is based on) to share work in #openscience and #openhardware... But even though the interactions seem a bit more artificial (as in people seem to be using more this work faccade/politeness and superlatives), the whole thing has a great reach... I wonder if anyone has similar experiences or would like to share ideas/comments? Similar to this, anyone here who is primarily interested in #research #science and is using any other social platforms, has experiences/comments to share?

One of the best things about my current job is being able to collaborate in many different projects. This week a paper on the origins of movement in #drosophila came out! This is all the great work from Jonathan and Claudio, but it was great to support them with a bit of technical improvements to streamline their work!
