Does anyone have a good explanation on why so many #universities in the #uk use Microsoft as their "everything" solution? Email, office software, instant communication, phone, video calls, cloud storage... And more interestingly what is the average cost per university community member?

1-any examples of large corp/cooperatives/groups that rely on #opensoftware for things like #cloud services, #email, instant messaging and video conferences?
2-based on 1 any place with numbers on if they save money with that and the gains they get from other advantages of using #opensource?
Thanks a bunch!

so, we were just hit with news on the new "voluntary leave programme" at the University of Sussex, due to the shitshow that is core funding for #highereducation in the #uk and a big drop in student n#
Past being angry, I would like to know if there are other Unis in the same situation and if people are already past the shock and thinking about what to do to navigate this?
How will the "remainers" (seems we use this term too much in this country) cope with the extra workload, and how due we prevent a downward spiral of "needs for cut -> less people to work -> worst student experience -> less matriculation -> more need for cuts, etc"
Hit me up if you would like to vent, chat, organise, and find pathways to cope...

2) contains the history of development of these two? Things like, when and why they were created, etc? Thanks in advance! (And thanks for potential boosts that could help this reach the right people)
In collab with @nenckiopenlab Poland and UK, we are running an #Arduino for #neuroscience workshop! Come and learn the basics, how to use it to make experimental setups and #openhardware!
Registration takes 2 min, but closes on October 30th! so apply apply apply!
📍 The workshop will take place at University of Sussex Library, Brighton, Nov 20-22 2024 from 9 AM to 6 PM.
💷 The cost of the workshop is GBP 150, as we need to cover travel/accommodation costs from instructors!
here is the link for applying: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScufuDaWuJYOSWM5zmMGt3mdjL1S2dgmr_wB9S9jrnRaOW1sw/viewform
and below a longer explanation of the course
Have you built your own setup, or do you plan to do it 🔧 ??
If yes we have the perfect workshop for you: Arduino Programming for neuroscience!
Arduino is a powerful device and it recently became a indispensable tool used in laboratory 🔬 – you can use it to control lasers, build automated mazes or stimulus delivery systems for behavioural experiments and much more.
It is easy to learn and doesn’t require previous experience with programming.
During our workshop, you will learn everything you need to start building your own devices. We will guide you through the topics ranging from basic electronics, diodes, trough motors and servos to sensors of all types. You will learn how to use Arduino to control different research devices and synchronize them! 💪
After the workshop, you will be able to write complex Arduino programs and have a knowledge of electronics that will allow you to design devices used in your lab. 🌟

19.10.2024 19:29Hello world! Testing a cross-posting app for #mastodon and #blueskyI never thought I would write something like this.. but after the twitter explosion(implosion?) I learned about mastodon and have been enjoying the experience here so far (and the idea of decentralised systems, my god, so good) ... But as fate would have it, I am also using #linkedin (even though I don't like the whole idea/system it is based on) to share work in #openscience and #openhardware... But even though the interactions seem a bit more artificial (as in people seem to be using more this work faccade/politeness and superlatives), the whole thing has a great reach... I wonder if anyone has similar experiences or would like to share ideas/comments? Similar to this, anyone here who is primarily interested in #research #science and is using any other social platforms, has experiences/comments to share?

From here we scale up production and start making #openhardware out of plastic bottles!!
It's Alive!! The #openscience lab has moved in (well, almost everything) to its new home!! Interestingly we are occupying an almost abandoned corridor at #universityofsussex, with the goal of bringing needed updates and life to certain lab/#science/#research practices!

Anyone has tips to keep consistency and a good balance not to be always working (or thinking about work related things?)

It is a big honour to be at Instituto Fiocruz in Belo Horizonte and to be able to talk about #openscience and #openhardware, how they can and should be used as tools to improve #reseaerch & #education and all the work we have been doing at @universityofsussex and @trendinafrica to enable everyone to do the same

Read it all here at #openacess @ e-life (it was also great to have this under their new #preprint review system).
