An NVDA update fix which doesn't work, sort of. A new NVDA alpha, 35670, is available now. It makes an attempt to fix alpha 35622's check update error. So if you're running NVDA alpha 35622 and check for updates, you'll find alpha 35670. However, if you select Download and then select the Not now button in the Donation dialog, nothing will be downloaded and the dialog will close abruptly. So I suggest grabbing alpha 35670 manually from here: https://download.nvaccess.org/snapshots/alpha/nvda_snapshot_alpha-35670,a71589de.exe

After several days of using Thorium Reader—finding bugs and reporting them on GitHub—I’m officially done with it. Annotation creation is completely broken with screen readers, the cursor jumps erratically when returning to the reader window from any dialog, and the table of contents is a nightmare to access. Unlike QRead, where it’s neatly structured, Thorium just dumps it at the top of the document with complex heading levels and links, making navigation tedious.
On top of that, its browser-based text display makes the app sluggish, EPUB books are split into chunks, forcing constant navigation adjustments instead of smooth Up/Down scrolling, and the lack of menus or UI-based navigation makes mastering the keystrokes unnecessarily difficult—unlike every other reader app.
Back to QRead. If only it had a blank line hiding option…

FSReader, the DAISY reader from Freedom Scientific, is a responsive book reader, much more responsive than Thorium Reader, and, unlike what Freedom Scientific wants, it can also be installed without JAWS if you have access to its MSI installer. However, lack of Epub support aside, it can't open internal links in many DAISY books and just displays the following error message:
FSReader dialog Sorry, the external link could not be opened.
It seems to have been abandoned by FS.

BBC Sounds will soon be unavailable for listeners residing outside the UK, as from "Spring 2025". Those going abroad temporarily will still be able to listen to BBC Sounds. The state of book-reading apps on Windows is pretty disappointing:
• QRead: Discontinued, lacks formatting display, doesn’t announce links, and can’t hide blank lines.
• Bookworm: No DAISY or Bookshare support.
• Thorium Reader: Still in development, but buggy—crashes with many DAISY books and only displays one page at a time.
• Dolphin EasyReader: Limited to a single page view, no smooth navigation between pages, and has an odd navigation UI.
• Kurzweil 1000: Versatile with a built-in dictionary, but discontinued, lacks heading navigation, and is very expensive.
• Speech Central: Costs $8, making it impossible to test if it truly supports text-only navigation via screen readers, as it's mainly marketed as an audio reader. According to the dev, development for Windows 11 has been paused.

There’s a bug in NVDA affecting book-reading apps like Dolphin EasyReader and FSReader. When a word or phrase is bold, italicized, or both, NVDA announces "edit" as if it's editable—though EPUB and DAISY books aren’t editable in these apps. Additionally, NVDA displays these words or phrases on separate lines, making navigation harder, and making continuous reading filled with more pauses than necessary. I’ve tried various NVDA settings but can’t suppress the "edit" or "out of edit" announcements. JAWS isn’t affected. I haven't tested Thorium 3.1 as it becomes unresponsive with my DAISY books.

Thorium Reader v3.1, the accessible ebook reader that has generated a lot of excitement, was released a few days ago. But it's still as buggy and problematic as before. I tried opening a Bookshare book titled 1100 Words You Need to Know + Online Practice, Build Your Vocabulary in Just 15 Minutes a Day (Eighth Edition) with Thorium Reader, and it immediately became unresponsive. This happens with both NVDA and Narrator. Makes me wonder—what exactly goes into testing apps like this?

NVDA Alpha 35286 finally adds leading silence detection and removal logic. The changelog says:
"The silence at the beginning of speech will now be trimmed when using OneCore voices, SAPI5 voices, and some third-party voice add-ons to improve their responsiveness."
Though not mentioned in the changelog, it also affects eSpeak NG.
