The “Rasphuis Poort” (grate house gate) is situated at Heiligeweg. In the 17th century, it led to the ‘Rasphuis’, a correctional facility for vagrants and later a reformatory for juvenile offenders.
Inhabitants were put to work grating Brazilian wood into pigment powder for paint. 🎨 🇧🇷 🪵
Built around 1️⃣6️⃣0️⃣3️⃣, the gate was the outermost of two, with the inner one long since gone. Designed by Hendrick de Keyser, its relief above the arch and columns depicts a cart loaded with Brazilian wood, pulled by lions, bears, wild boars, and tigers.🐯 🐻 🐗 🐯

The sculpture at Metrostation Weesperplein honors the old “Weesperpoortstation” (1843–1939), the former railway station from which to depart to Utrecht and Arnhem. Carved in sandstone, this artwork was erected in 1941.
Created by architect Piet Kramer in the ‘Amsterdamse School’ style, it displays three layered historical locomotives representing the railways’ evolution. 🚂🚃🚄
The first steam train between Amsterdam and Haarlem (sept. 20, 1839) drove at the speed of 30 km/h and was pulled by a locomotive called “De Arend”. In 1908, the country’s first electric train took off between Rotterdam Hofplein and Scheveningen Kurhaus. It was powered by a 10,000-volt AC system from a dedicated power plant. 🔋⚡️
The first diesel train followed in 1934, running from Amsterdam to Arnhem. 🚂💪

Artist Steffen Maas made a mosaic portrait of the legendary Nelson Mandela at the corner of Krugerplein and Pretoriusstraat (also called “De Krugerkop”). 🇿🇦🙌
The mosaic was constructed from hundreds of wooden shields with South African patterns in 2014. It emerged from the collaboration between residents from the Transvaal buurt, among others. The mosaic was intended to confirm or emphasize the neighborhood's connection with South Africa. 🤝

“Molen De Gooyer” (Gooyer Mill) seen from Zeeburgerpad, with in the distance the “Dageraad Brug” (Dawn Bridge).
“De Gooyer” stands firm on its stone pedestal at the Funenkade since the year 1️⃣8️⃣1️⃣4️⃣
Since the 16th century, the mill has served as a grain mill in various locations throughout the city.

“De Piramides” (the pyramids) is a residential complex on Jan van Galenstraat. Designed by S. Soeters and fully finished in 2006. In this frame you’re looking at the back of the two 50-meter triangular towers (housing 82 apartments). 🔼🔼
Inspired by Marcanti Island’s shape and 17th-century stepped gables, its brick facades loosely reflect the Amsterdam School style. It also serves as a noise buffer for the neighborhood behind it since the Jan van Galen (or s105) is a main entry road from the west side of town. 🚗🚕🚙🚙🚑🚛🛻🚒🚚🚙

Another mural by “The London Police”. This UK art duo, started in Amsterdam in 1998. Their black-and-white ‘Lad’ characters now appear worldwide in major cities.🏙️ 🌆
In 2017, they created a 16-meter mural at this blind wall at the Zeeburgerdijk, to revitalize a neglected area. The work depicts a neighborhood woman with the characteristic figure and the fierce Amsterdam flag. ❌❌❌

On the side wall of Sarphatistraat number 163 you will find a huge mural in full colour. The work covers the entire wall and shows a boy surrounded by butterflies and tropical leaves, looking into the distance in the direction of the Roeterseiland campus. Along a modest walking path in the east part of Amsterdam, you’ll stumble upon this hidden piece. It seems to be a collab between York One & KBTR.
“KBTR is a graffiti-gnome from the city of Utrecht, based on a traditional garden gnome. The name comes from ‘KaBouTeR’ (Dutch for gnome). KBTR is the artist’s graffiti tag, not a general term for gnomes. These gnomes are known for their red hat, white beard, and ever-changing appearance.” 🎅🏽
YorkOne’s artistic journey began, writing graffiti in Amsterdam during the early 80s punk wave, and quickly embraced the New York style as it spread to Europe. 🌇🇪🇺

In the northern part of the “Anjeliersbuurt”, near the “Driehoekbuurt” 🔺 (triangle neighborhood) you’ll stumble upon this blind corner.
It fits within a well-known pattern of historic Amsterdam architecture in which corner facades have no windows due to different reasons. This is the corner of the Lijnbaansgracht and Goudsbloemstraat. 🪟

The statue at the courthouse along Highway A10 (or Amsterdam ring) is “Love or Generosity” (in Dutch: “Liefde of edelmoedigheid”). 🩷⚖️👊
This more than 5-meter-high sculpture by American artist Nicole Eisenman was installed in 2020. 🇺🇸 🎨🧑🏻🎨
The giant, dressed in sweatpants and firm boots, bends forward and holds an owl, an arrow, and an acorn in his hands (symbols of wisdom, perseverance, and protection). 🦉🏹
The statue serves as a gentle gatekeeper, offering comfort and relaxation to anyone who visits the courthouse. 👩⚖️
