The first step to criminalizing protest is dehumanizing activists, so as part of the Drilled series on the increasing criminalization of climate protests, we're bringing you real human stories instead. Today, meet Joanna Smith, a mom who finds herself facing 10 years in jail for a non-violent, non-destructive protest.

New season of Drilled is out now! We've been following the development of a new oil state in Guyana for the past 2+ years. It's a fascinating story and one that really lets us examine modern oil colonialism and the "fossil fuels cure poverty" idea up close and in great detail. Episode with transcript is here: https://www.drilledpodcast.com/s8-light-sweet-crude/

Something I've noticed a real spike in over the past 3 or so years: people assuming that I'm not getting back to them right away because I'm ideologically opposed to them or their client. When the reality is I'm just constantly insanely busy, as are a lot of people! What's going on there -- general trend toward ideological divides? pandemic made everyone more sensitive? curious if other folks have found this too (because it might also be that I was ranting too much on the bird site for a while!)

It's exhausting, even in a space like this where people are exponentially nicer

I *was* surprised to learn that the government pub'd reports on it and the media covered it in a big way in the 1980s and fuck-all happened. Jesus how many versions of this story are we gonna live through? https://www.drilledpodcast.com/gas-knew-too-everything-you-need-to-know-on-climate-this-week/

To mark the occasion, I wrote about accountability and how it gets misunderstood as finger-pointing https://www.drilledpodcast.com/accountability-is-a-climate-solution/

1.1.2023 23:34Ahhhh I misread -- they just re-opened after Covid but it's actually been around since 1995...which somehow makes it more disturbing?!Apparently Disney World has just opened a new water park that takes as its concept "the mythical tale of a one-time ski resort that melted into soothing, warm water." In case anyone's casting about for dystopian climate shit, JESUS. Who came up with this? I know, guys, get this -- it's a water wonderland created by a melted ski resort. YES Tyler, that is brilliant, let's run with it.
(related, Disney has a long weird history with oil and climate:https://rigged.ghost.io/get-em-while-theyre-young/)

27.12.2022 21:58I see men explaining my beat to me is not exclusive to birdchan 🤣Important info already gleaned from this investigation includes: -evidence that yes, fossil fuel companies donate to universities to shape the narrative and the research agenda and to get a window into what environmentalists are talking about.
- details of the industry's manipulation of media
- evidence that it is knowingly pushing false solutions, trying to lock them in to extend the life of fossil fuels
Seems like a giant waste of money and time not to finish the investigation
So far the House Oversight Committee has released about1500 pages of documents that were subpoenaed as part of their #climate disinfo investigation. That's a fraction of the documents they've received. They haven't had time or staff to go through them all. Easy solution would be to hand the investigation & remaining documents off to the Senate, which was the plan. Last week they suddenly reversed themselves. So now unless something changes by Jan 2 the investigation dies. https://theintercept.com/2022/12/24/oil-gas-climate-disinformation/
