We finished reading through the 195 amazing submissions of short fiction and poetry we have received since February!
Thank you to everyone who has submitted. It is an honour to get a glimpse into the wild and fascinating imaginations of fellow writers and anarchists.
We have sent out our acceptance and rejection messages. Check your email if you have been waiting to hear from us.
Our Moksha site is no longer active, but you can still find a short version of our project description on the @chillsubs_official website. As always, you can contact us at anarchistfictions@proton.me.
Keep following us here and on IG for updates and occasional fundraising ptiches and reading recommendations.
We can't wait to start producing Issue No. 1!
30.6.2024 19:20We finished reading through the 195 amazing submissions of short fiction and poetry we have received since February! Thank you to everyone...We are still open for submissions until June 10!
We are specifically looking for literary fiction and poetry by BIPOC writers and people of marginalized genders.
*** What do we mean by literary fiction? ***
Jeanette Winterson's 2007 novel The Stone Gods is a marvelous example of literary fiction that, while set in the same futuristic, decaying world of much science fiction, offers heaps of glimmering poetic prose.
The photos here (not the best, apologies) are of her descriptions of:
a) the rebellious queer protagonist's idyllic haven on a dying planet
b) a male space cowboy's description of a planet much like our own that he had stumbled across in space. (I know.... We've already said we are tired of male space cowboys. But this one showed up in an irrefutably queer novel, and only as a minor foil.)
The plot involves desertion, subterfuge, the defense of a monstrous autonomous zone against a Leviathanic technocracy, lots of sex, and lots of death. More importantly, the words Winterson chooses to tell the story create images sharp enough to prick our imaginations but open enough to let us do the imagining.
The novel does have an 18-page Easter Island subplot that portrays Indigenous people as part of a perplexing and atrocious landscape through which the European narrator moves. What can I say, other than if she had submitted this to Anarchist Fictions, I'd be bold enough to ask her for a rewrite of that section?
Hope to see you at constellation anarchy fest this weekend where you can pick up some of our cute posters and zines...

We need money to:
- print the journal
- pay our writers! This is really important :)
- cover other costs like maintaining our Moksha submission manager subscription
- keep our submissions FREE. Many other lit journals raise money for their projects by charging writers to submit their work. We don't do this.
If you donate $5 or $10, we will mail you some zines we made ourselves of stories we think you will love.
If you donate $25 and live in Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, or Montreal, we will hand deliver your copy of the journal in Jan 2025.
If you donate $50, we will mail you your copy of the journal in Jan 2025 (shipping included, to addresses in the US and canada).
Thanks for your support! Xo

“I’m reading Hustling Verse, an anthology of sex workers’ poetry. Edited by Amber Dawn and Justin Ducharme. I wanted to highlight this poem by Jasbina Justice,

✨ Slippery, Sticky, Messy, Gooey ✨

Jasbina perfectly balances explicit vs imagination. I love the way their poem moves down the page at the same time as it moves into the earth. The poem has a slow, luxurious quality and so much texture!"
This is what I'm reading today. It's not fiction, but it's by one of the best fiction writers.
What are you reading?
What is your favourite OEB story?

"Anarchist Fictions is a new print journal of original and reprinted short fiction and poems on themes about, or adjacent to, anarchy. Set to launch in early Winter 2025, the journal will be 150 pages of beautiful art and writing that captures and recreates the fiery will to destroy existing society. We need to raise $4200 by April 2024 to make this happen. The first 25 donors of $50 or more will get a journal mailed to them in Winter 2025. Proceeds will go to paying for the printing of the journal, and paying our writers and artists. Funds raised that exceed our goal will go to increasing honoraria for our writers and artists. Read on for details about the journal and how to send us your work."
