Ah, five new sketchpads with large, A3 size paper. Recently, I’ve begun to keep one of these open between me and the keyboard at all times when I work on writing projects at the computer. It feels so liberating to be able to take notes, make lists or draw up little sketches in a physical format whenever I like. I find it particularly useful when I develop ideas for a book or a chapter, but also during research.

Content warning:World war 2 history

In the book, Trude tells the story of Norway’s nazi «minister president» Vidkun Quisling who was installed by the German occupiers during world war 2. His suitcase, which she bought at an auction, plays a major part. Many of Trude’s sources were at the book launch party tonight. One of the guests was the Jewish boy who lived across the street from Quisling and who happened to survive to tell the story of being his neighbor.

Content warning:World war 2 history

Author and journalist Trude Lorentzen read from her new book Quisling’s Suitcase tonight at Akershus Castle, on the very spot where Quisling was executed for treason in 1945. She led us on a great walk to historical spots in Oslo before her book launch event. The book is based on her earlier podcast series which has bern a huge success in Norway.

For the past couple of days, I've been more or less stuck while trying to write up the final chapter for my next book. Can't find a good way to start. So now I'll try a good old trick: Writing a long note to myself discussing the situation, problems and possible ways forward. It's a way to keep writing when you feel you can't write, and to actually develop your ideas instead of being overwhelmed by the challenges. Works for me.

I’m a non-fiction writer from Norway. «Wild: On the Trail of the Red Fox» will be published by Greystone Books. I write in Norwegian, and some of my books have been published in German and other languages. Once upon a time I did a phd in sociology, but my writing mostly focuses on topics such as wildlife, the natural world and environmental issues.
