Hi Annelies. Thanks very much for getting in touch. I agree with you that talking about "empathy" in this context is problematic. If you go to the online Notes & Sources for chapter 16 you'll find a discussion of this in relation to a close autistic friend, who I think does demonstrate empathy - just differently from me. I'm thinking of importing this into the main body of the book for paperback, as a footnote. I really appreciate your feedback.

Herzog is a huge influence on my work, so of course I liked his, but @berenyi_miki's "Fingers Crossed" is a revelation, both for her odd childhood and tales of Lush, the most underrated Brit band of the last few decades.
