Ah, a reminder from Facebook that it's my dead friend’s birthday and I should let them know that I'm thinking of them.

(I know this isn't a new or unique complaint. Which makes it all the worse: despite years of people pointing out how bad this is, companies like Facebook just don't effing care. Anything to try to juice engagement. 1) let us opt out of things like birthday notification, and 2) just say that it's their birthday; we are capable of deciding if we want to do anything in response.)

Had some nice views during partial eclipse but fully clouded over just in time for totality.

This weekend a friend and I visited the new Overlook Walk on Seattle's waterfront. It's an improved path between the market and the waterfront but somehow both of us had been expecting something bigger (instead it narrows to two stairways) and with more interspersed greenery breaking up the concrete (instead the plants are mostly lining the sides). There's a big platform area atop the new aquarium extension; didn't see many people there. (I had thought that was a wide slope to the waterfront.)

Installed the immediate software updates (because I was pretty sure it was still safe), then unplugged the network cable. (Never set up wifi.) It's a year-old model & I don't use the built-in streaming apps; I doubt there will be another software update I’d consider important.

But while I still trust Apple far more than almost everyone else, they have burned a lot of that (and other) trust in more recent years, starting(?) in 2019 when they *did* keep and listen to some recordings of Siri requests without any notice or permission. Plus some related data is getting synced between devices via iCloud, governments can (and do) get iCloud data (at default settings), and the UK government has reportedly demanded a worldwide backdoor.
