If you are recruiting a PhD student next year (or know someone who is), I’d love to add and boost your PhD student recruitment post!

This year, I’ve rewritten the PhD opportunities tracker so we can collect all posts for everyone, even if it’s just a ‘I’m taking a student this year’ section on a personal website (although I also got mastodon posts working too!).

I'm trying to collect everyone's recruitment tweets! (haven't figured out mastodon embedding yet 🙁)

I could imagine that someone will make a large, vaguely (or jokingly) named instance that everyone slowly joins. Anyone that's ever joined a 5k+ person facebook group when it was more popular knows what I'm talking about. Ex: subtle asian traits grew to 2M people.

However, mastadon introduces the awkward question of: who keeps the lights on? I can see institutions fronting the bill for more professional networks, and hobbyists for hobby-related networks, but who will fund the funny ones?

I don't entirely like that I have to pick *one* place though, and it would be cool to see some sort of way of joining several...

Would I base my account at mountainbiking.social? Probably not. But I'd love to join a community of folks interested in specific things in addition to my original community.

For one, can make it much easier to discover people to follow by topic/community!

Seems like most HCI folks are joining hci.social, and ML folks sigmoid.social. Scroll through the 'public directory' and you can instantly see everyone in that community! Not something twitter was built for, but something you can tell they tried to build in later.
