The only way to collapse the conflict of interests between the user or audience (the “principal”) and the toolmaker or artist (the “agent”) is to have the agent also be a principal.

Empathy has its limits.

There is no way of sensemaking such that you can merge with another human and fully understand what helps or hurts them. That is the stuff of fantasy and science fiction.

And so, the best way to design, say, a musical instrument, is to be a musician.

The word “grok” has a few meanings. In common parlance, it means “to understand”.

But it also means “to merge with”.

It perfectly captures the nature of understanding.

One can only grok something if you have merged with it, if you’ve become one with it.

Four kinds of trust falling at the same time.

Trust in vote counting
Trust in verified tweets
Trust in vouched reserves
Trust in visual images

Cryptographic verification is a partial solution. But also need high-trust startup societies.

“Better”, not by any technical standard, but by how it meets expectations.

SwiftUI feels so much like an parallel universe React:

Subviews are like components

State bindings are like React state

But also, modifiers are very cool.

Plus, being able to edit layout and style and see a live preview directly in Xcode.

Nothing’s stopping us from making software today with that aesthetic!

The UI of first-party Ableton plugins are reminiscent of that aesthetic and I just love it so much. The function & content shine through

Learning SwiftUI right now. First time venturing outside of web land.

Everything old feels new again, and being just a bit lost as a beginner is a nice feeling.

So far, of what I’ve seen, SwiftUI is more natural than HTML/CSS. Maybe I don’t need React Native after all?
