Building on my Iowa news failed Iowans and is fixing to fail the nation thoughts. In 2015 Trump denied the Des Moines Register press credentials in retaliation against the editorial board. Since then, Iowa's news desert has gotten even bigger and access journalists have taken over. Iowa news outlets that remain have allowed power to go unchecked in the state. Access journalism is the rule now. I've seen reporters I admire gushing about a recent Trump rally in Sioux City, others immediately pivoting to caucuses.

This is the exact wrong thing to do. And watching it happen is absolutely grotesque.

Iowa voted out the last Democrat it had in congress. That Democrat, Cindy Anne, is the only Iowa rep or sen to vote for all the billions in relief funds to Iowa. Iowa is now poised to become a literal wasteland of untested, under(un)regulated CO2 pipelines. And I can't wait, frankly until all those GOP-voting farmers (I'm a farmer's kid) get their land seized by private companies and watch it go up in flames. I'm pretty tossed y'all.

A Voting Success Story: Iowa GOP has tried every trick in the book to disenfranchise voters. Voter ID laws, shutting down drive-up voting, cutting locations, and early voting, etc. A man I don't know reached out to ask how to help his wife vote - she lost her ID - because I am a nerd, I knew Iowa allows attesters to verify a voter without ID is who they say they are and are able to vote in that precinct. I let him know - and yesterday he was able to attest for his wife and they both voted early

My brains itch. Been working on a long form print (what?!) piece for what feels like 100 years. Finally getting to the end of the project and forgot how intense the final fact checking/editing/last minute [you name it] of actually getting a piece printed is.

My editor (bless her) has cut the piece down by half (still around 5K words) which is where the real work is - the shredding.

In Iowa, Johnson County has done some good in this area, paying essential workers (mostly meatpacking industry/Latinx workers) but now French speaking Congolese workers are being excluded

As a native Iowan I am focusing on the elections there. Iowa is a bellwether/canary in the coal mine. Kim Reynolds - the governor - was hand selected to give the SOTU response. It wasn't a mistake. The policy violence being meted out by the right wing GOP is breathtaking and often was passed before Florida or TX even got going. It matters. It also matters as #Journalists and #Editors start thinking about #Caucuses (god help us all)
