The EU's #AIAct went through the trilogues, but as Amnesty rightly points out there are glaring problems.
Harmful AI is not allowed to be marketed in the EU, but what about outside EU?
There is a dangerous double standard here.
Closely related I think, are regulatory failures on problematic surveillance spyware used to monitor innocent individuals as repeatedly highlighted by Amnesty and researchers of @citizenlab .
Going forward key lessons should be applied

Has a lot of implications. Also highlights the importance of independent archiving of data from things like the platform Ad libraries.

Personally, I think that solving the reviewing issues will go a long way towards fixing many of the other valid points raised in the original 🐦🧵. Lets start with solving the problem of predatory publishing houses profiting off the backs of reviewers and the whole scientific community first.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, good work appears everywhere. Its impact or importance can be very subjective and difficult to measure. We should not forget that the inherent tendency towards hyperbole happens in a context were reviewers are asked to put in more of their limited time into reviewing without a reward for their hard work ...

Having a look at how reviewing happens in practice, for instance see this very interesting paper ( https://adamdoupe.com/publications/peer-review-process-oakland22.pdf), we again see a world that is very different from the ideals that this notion of importance hacking seems to present about reviewing. Issues such as the concept of "novelty" being subjective and the randomness in the peer review process are very common in even the most prestigious scientific venues ...

This in fact, is the art of writing scientific papers. To organize the messy work in such a way as to convey the importance and significance of the results to a set of reviewers that have very little attention span and no reward for the work they are doing despite its clear importance ...

One thing I find questionable about the idea is that it subscribes to this notion of a cleanly written scientific paper that sticks to a strict methodology while in practice the behind-the-scenes reality of most scientific work is a much more messy process. In reality, papers, even good ones, narrate their results and sell their value to reviewers. Nothing inherently wrong with that ...
