So today marks my 10-year-in-the-industry anniversary. On this day, 2015, I started as developer technology engineer at AMD. Fast forward 10 years - in which I worked on new APIs, new 3D features, and contributed to multiple GPUs - and the world is as exciting as it was when I started.

Can't wait to see what the next 10 years have in store!

A few months late (... it's been a busy last quarter), but here we go, Pygments 2.19 is out: pygments.org/

597 languages, my goal for 2025 is to get to 600+ languages supported :) And maybe we'll get to 1 million projects using Pygments this year as well (currently at 903k by GitHub's latest count.)

Last release for this year for my static page generator: liara.sh13.net/

The main change is that the page data is now accessible for short-codes, which makes it possible to generate something like a menu outside of a template. Not sure I'm super happy with this direction as the next step is technically exposing the site itself to short-codes, at which point it is not really short code any more, but a content building block.

Back from GPC 2024. Looks like we pulled off Europe's biggest graphics (programming) releated conference on first try - more than 300 people came. Amazing week, and looking forward to start planning the 2025 edition :)

In case you're just wondering which is actually the fastest hash algorithm when using Python 3.10/Ubuntu 22.04, I ended up benchmarking a few today.

On my Linux box (Zen 4), SHA1 is at least twice as fast as the competition (SHA3, MD5, Blake2d), I presume due to OpenSSL using HW intrinsics for it. Hash speed is ~3 GiB/sec (single core.)

Just released a new version of my static page generator (the one I use for my blog, among other things): liara.sh13.net/ (release package is on PyPI.)

No major changes, but the bump to Python 3.10 allowed me to use `match`. Additionally, I've improved the typing annotations further. You can see the full diff here: github.com/Anteru/liara/compar

The older I get & the bigger the projects become, the more terrified I am how easy it is to say "we'll get to this next year" or even later than that. It always feels that nothing should take that long (1 year? 100 people? C'mon!) but the reality is that many complex things go slow. At the same time, the worst thing to do is accept a year of development time when the problem itself is not that complex and it's self-inflicted, and someone determined can push through it in a few weeks or months.

Versioning question: Is dropping support for an older version of a programming language a major or minor change? I.e. version 2.5 of my software supported Python 3.8-3.12, the next version supports only 3.10-3.12 (but no API/functional changes). What kind of version bump would you expect?

Major revision: 3.x series starts
Minor revision: 2.6 starts
Patch is fine: 2.5.1
Change the versioning scheme altogether!

I should have done this much earlier -- easy to deploy (add two files), easy to debug (systemctl list-timers), and much more flexible (run after system start? Sure! Run an hour after the last run finished, no overlaps? Easy! Run at a random time? Of course!) -- if you're still doing cron jobs and distributing them at large, you should really take a look at systemd timers: freedesktop.org/software/syste
