I am currently using EPA greenhouse gas emissions data for my research. I'm worried the federal government will remove online access to EPA data sets, like they have done in the past during a previous administration. So, I modified a script shared by colleagues to bulk download all Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program (GHGRP) data: github.com/ekcomputer/GHGRP_fo

Data to download can be (currently) found here: epa.gov/enviro/greenhouse-gas-

Wish I could say I biked to #AGU24 from Rhode Island, but I did bike the last stretch from the train station, with a detour into Virginia.

A pristine lake in the Peace-Athabasca Delta I photographed by UAV. These delta lakes have been drying for decades and the cause is still being debated. Human causes like climate warming and dam construction likely play a cause, as do natural glacial rebound changes to the ground elevation and modulation of river paths.

Fascinating (at least to me) new finding that subtle changes in the earth's rotation rate related to melting ice sheets may necessitate a first-ever leap second SUBTRACTED from GPS time in the next decade. Since 1972, they have only ever been 27 leap seconds, and all of them have been ADDED to GPS time.

Some interesting findings at the International Workshop this week:
- There have been few tundra fires in N. America over the past thousands of years until recently
- Humans only reached Greenland about 2 thousand years ago, likely via following frozen fjords and eating musk ox
- Shrubs have increased in the Arctic during past periods of climate warming, and especially now due to human-induced climate change.
- Without climate change, the next ice age would be starting in 200 years.

Launching today: MethaneSAT, the first satellite 🛰️ launched by a nonprofit organization. It will target world oil and gas sites and make methane emissions data freely available to hold emitters accountable. I have been privileged to be part of this team for the last few months.

We found that emit less than previously thought. High-resolution mapping shows that in the Arctic (and globally), predictions of total lake area tend to be too high. These findings better match independent measurements of atmospheric methane, which implies a greater fraction of emissions is coming from us! 😨

My latest paper describes this phenomenon in more detail and is published by the at doi.org/10.1029/2023GL104825
