Sarclet Haven can be found on the east coast of Caithness south of Wick. It forms a focal point for the story and does exist, unlike nearby Sarclet Castle and Sarclet Broch which are both fictional.

This is the memorial to the men who died when a Short Sunderland flying boat crashed into a remote hillside in Caithness in August 1942. The real-life mystery surrounding the crash is the starting point for the story told in the book.

The fictional Sarclet Broch on the east coast of Caithness south of Wick is the hub around which much of the story revolves and it is where all three of the murders in the book take place. It is closely based on the Broch of Gurness in Orkney, shown in this image.

This modern wide-angle view shows the Osborne Hotel in Valletta. The two central characters stay here while in Malta and although two storeys have been added to the building since 1943, it would be very recognisable to them.
