It's the first day of month, and one of our newest members, Ashley, is asking us to mobilize! “I have gender dysphoria and live my life as a woman in a men’s prison. I have for 7 or 8 years been trying to get facial hair removal. Having to shave my face every 3 days, even being on HRT, is messing with my already fragile mental health. I feel so helpless and hopeless. They refuse me this gender affirming treatment over and over.” Let's show up for Ashley!tinyurl.com/Act4Ashley

Check out ARC's Black History Month reading list!
1. Wake by Rebecca Hall. This graphic novel describes women-led slave revolts, primarily on the slave ships of the middle passage--as well as the process of uncovering this history. “The women used their relative mobility and access to weapons to plan and initiate revolt after revolt after revolt.“
2. Black on Both Sides by C. Riley Snorton. Black Trans history but also so much more--a a Black history of gender, a Trans history of race. Writing is dense, but so worth it. “My analysis here is invested in reviving and inventing strategies for inhabiting unlivable worlds.”
3. A Bound Woman Is a Dangerous Thing by DaMaris B. Hill. Poetry, mixed with prose and photos, remembering incarcerated African American women from U.S. history.
“i say
you, a woman the color of wet sienna,
who wore the truth
as radiant as you? “
4. Everfair by Nisi Shawl. Alternate history of pluralist, queer, steampunk resistance to Belgium’s genocidal colonization of Congo. “Well then, do we truly need to discuss how I ought to present these offers? Peace or war? Freedom or bondage? Our answer is obvious.”
5. That the Blood Stay Pure by Arica Coleman. Painful history of African American / Native American relations in the context of Virginia’s effort to maintain “racial purity.” “By the dawn of the Jim Crow era, the colonial imposition of American Indian identity based on the absence of African ancestry would further exacerbate antagonism...”
6. Song in a Weary Throat by Pauli Murray. One of Murray’s memoirs, chronicling some of their brilliant efforts for racial and gender justice. “I was part of a tradition of continuous struggle, lasting nearly twenty years, to open the doors of the state university to Negroes.”
7. Miss Major Speaks by Toshio Meronek and Miss Major. An unforgettable series of interviews with Miss Major Griffin-Gracy about her life, work, communities, and vision. "The 99% of statues that celebrate one person, it’s bullshit. Those people didn’t get to do anything great without a damn crowd of people they worked with to get there.”
8. How Long ‘Til Black Future Month by NK Jemisin. Short story collection offering magical visions of Black pasts, futures, this world, and other worlds. "She understands why so many people hate her now. By existing, she reminds them of their smallness.”
9. The Memory Librarian by Janelle Monáe. Fierce collaboratively written sci fi offering visions of Black queer genderfuck musical resistance to colonization of our memories. “You were working to protect your own, but you decided everyone who didn’t fit your womanhood wasn’t worth protecting. Including me I guess, because I damn sure don't.”
10. Binti by Nnedi Okorafor. A Himba harmonizer travels to an intergalactic university, copes with trauma and transformation. ”We sat in my room and challenged each other to look out at the stars and imagine the most complex equation and then split it in half and then in half again and again.”

ARC has endorsed the March for Gaza on January 13 at 1pm at the National Mall in DC. Info on buses and more at march4gaza.org/.

COVID rates are very high right now. We recommend everyone wear a well-fitted mask on the bus and at the protest—it can reduce risk of COVID and other contagious illnesses for you and others, foil facial recognition from those who may want to doxx or surveil you, and help slightly with tear gas (you would need an actual gas mask for full protection there). If you need a KN95 mask, DM or email us with your mailing address, and we’ll stick a couple in the mail for you. And for those who can’t be in the streets, remember there are tons of other ways to take action—check out this digital action toolkit from the Palestinian Feminist Collective for ideas. palestinianfeministcollective.org/all-out-for-palestine/

It isn't always easy to ask for financial support in our culture, but we're excited about what your support has helped us to do so far, and we need your support again to keep going and do even more! Read the words of a few of our advisory board members here, then please head over to tinyurl.com/ARCGiving to give as generously as you can--and spread the word! There are lots of amazing orgs out there, but if you are invested in a gender justice movement that puts incarcerated survivors first, and if you want a legal and policy strategy for trans, LGBQ, reproductive and women's rights that supports the power of our incarcerated leaders and jailhouse lawyers, ARC Gender Justice should make your list. Thank you so much!
And for those who don't like paypal or want to make sure we get your full donation without processing fees, you can always mail a check to our fiscal sponsor--just be extra sure to put ARC Gender Justice on the memo line.

It’s Day 5 of our Week of Action–and today we’re sharing learning! As they cut off communication in Gaza and strip LGBTQ and anti-racist books from libraries, curricula, and prisons in Florida and beyond, we owe it to ourselves and each other to seek out and share the dreams, histories, and narratives that nurture our spiritual and political growth.
1) ARC member Nadirah Ali has had to work hard to make sure that she and other Muslims–most of them Black women– can practice their faith in women’s prisons in Pennsylvania, often fighting restrictions on observing Ramadan or praying jummah. Right now she needs our help with donations to her facility’s religious library. It has almost no Islamic books aside from the Qur’an. We’ve teamed up with the Feminist Islamic Troublemakers of North America (FITNA) to create a wish list of emancipatory, woman-centered, and feminist Islamic books–please check it out and send whatever you can! tinyurl.com/MuncyBooks

It's Day 4 of our Week of Action--and today we're sharing love and building connections. So many people are hurting right now. Let’s share some support and encouragement.
1) Send notes of encouragement to ARC member Rayne Vylette who was picked up on a parole violation and hit with the longest possible sentence on her original charges. She needs supportive messages from the community as she faces down more years in prison–write her at Robert Dziekan, X86984, 7000 H C Kelley Rd., Orlando, FL 32831-2518 or on securus.
2) Our friends at Let’s Get Free are calling for folks to send encouraging messages to Betty, who was just denied commutation at age 83. You can write her at Betty Heron #006917, SCI-Cambridge Springs, Smart Communications/PA DOC, PO Box 33028, St. Petersburg, FL 33733 or ConnectNetwork.
3) Share general messages of love and support for trans people on social with the hashtag .
4) Share beautiful art for online, in your window, or on the street.
