This was the first noir photo I took. The cops I used were 1:35 scale civilians and the dead body was a German soldier. I got the headlight effect by punching two holes in a small cardboard box and sticking an LED night light inside it. I used the bathroom to shoot most of my noir photos because it's the only room in the house that has no windows.

This photo was later used on the cover of an actual Crime novel, which was especially thrilling for me since it's pulp art work that really is my biggest inspiration for these kinds of scenes.

One thing I'm already liking about Mastodon is not having a character limit. With that in mind, I'll share a technique that I've used a fair bit.

A couple years ago I started taking a series of film noir themed photos, but was frustrated by the fact that there weren't all that many figures available in the poses and costumes that I wanted.

Eventually I realized that it was pretty easy to modify WW2 German uniforms to create a selection of figures in poses and costumes that could work in a film noir setting. All I has to do was add a necktie and lapel, cut away ant belting or obvious military detail, and use putty to fill in where needed. In some cases I barely altered the original pose and only changed the costume.
