Small gender triumph of the day: The smart speaker (which will be unceremoniously powered down before long) defaults to a masculine voice when asked a question in a femme voice, and vice versa. It knows my voice from The Before Times, and has always used a femme voice to reply to me.

Today, I asked it to set a timer, and it replied in a masc voice. Which means a) it didn't recognise me, and b) decided I was a girl.

Yesterday was kinda nutty. So what had happened was-

I had a car service appointment scheduled, which involved repairing some window trim and doing an alignment. I showed up the requisite 15 minutes early, and was informed alignments on EVs can take upwards of four hours 🙃 Oh. Note to self: choose an earlier appointment slot next time.

I was checked in (and checked out? 👀) by a young guy named B_ who was SUPREMELY awkward. Maybe because he was looking at an appointment for <deadname> and then I showed up looking like photo 1. Don't get me started on why this company's systems don't support display names.

Anyway, I hadn't intended to show up *hot* to the service centre, but woops 🤷‍♀️ I waited around through the rest of the morning, and all afternoon... Had a few interactions with B_ throughout the day: progress updates, and apologies that things were taking so long. And that the service techs discovered another issue to be fixed. Awkward every time. At least I got to chat with some friends all day instead of waiting for my poor phone hotspot to exhaust its battery trying to send my work VPN connection through brick walls.

At some point, in the middle of a conversation with B_, my brain took a step back and realized "Oh! Back when I thought I was a boy, this is how I used to act around pretty girls!" This was very affirming. I'm glad I was wearing a facemask, because I definitely had the goofiest grin plastered across my face. I may go mad with this newfound feminine power.

Eventually the techs wrapped up, 30 minutes before close. On the drive home, I discovered that wow! fixing a major alignment issue and a steering wheel miscalibration improves vehicle handling drastically! Who knew?

I think I finally had a chance to change clothes and remove makeup at 20:00 (8pm), only 14 hours after putting it on. Had dinner with my partner, then went outside to see the aurora borealis. Catastrophic climate change has never looked so pretty (photo 2).

Oh, and my partner had read the first three chapters of Polywise during the day to catch up with me, "Because I was upset she wasn't interested in reading it." Not sure I'm totally on board with the reasoning, but she liked it better than Polysecure at least. Now for the hard part.
