we didn't pick DIDs because they have "decentralized" in the name, they are basically just an abstraction barrier to uncouple identity mechanisms.

PLC needs work, but is self-certifying and that keeps a lot of paths open.

contact lists are awesome and under-utilized, and petnames are part of that. but they don't make sense for big-world or discovery.

we like DNS. it is technically centralized but power/governance is pretty devolved.

after the 2016 Trump election, there was a big movement to preserve government data and websites (EDGI: envirodatagov.org/).

I wasn't around for that, but I think there was a missed connection between web archive world and volunteer/movement world.

if similar efforts spring up in coming months, would love to help make connections between worlds!

I think what many folks really want from "federation" is a situation where no one party has more than 40% (or 10%, or whatever) of the network.

That is a powerful and special property! Fediverse has it today, and most networks don't.

It is different from adversarial interop though. There are open systems, like email (gmail) and git (github) which have sort of lost this. I still think the interop in those systems is valuable.

> This does not change the fact that the Bluesky app and the AT Protocol do not use blockchains or cryptocurrency, and we will not hyperfinancialize the social experience (through tokens, crypto trading, NFTs, etc.).

work continues on atproto: tooling for independent Lexicon development; more docs/specs and testing for interop; more complete and documented SDKs

I think that the Mastodon reporting system already has similar functionality, but not sure about other ActivityPub project. Curious for feedback!

We got a blog post out summarizing our launch of OAuth for AT Protocol, and what work remains. This has been a huge project, led by Matthieu, with input from a bunch of standards folks and devs.

This tries to solve the same basic challenge that ActivityPub has, and builds on work by @thisismissem and @aaronpk at the IETF (OAuth client metadata documents). Would be great if social web protocols end up aligning on the general shape of a solution and care share code+review.
